Gladiators Sign Defenseman Kevin Albers

DULUTH, Ga. - The Gwinnett Gladiators announced that they have signed defenseman Kevin Albers to an ECHL contract on Wednesday. The 23-year-old recently wrapped up his collegiate hockey career at Niagara University.

Albers was named captain of the Purple Eagles for the 2014-15 season. In four seasons, the 5-foot-11, 192-pound defenseman appeared in 121 games for Niagara, scoring 20 points off of 3 goals and 17 assists. The Lake Orion, Michigan native also accumulated 126 penalty minutes.

Albers will join the Gladiators on the road for the their Thursday night battle with the Orlando Solar Bears at 7:00 p.m.

In a separate transaction, the Portland Pirates announced today that they have recalled defenseman James Melindy from Gwinnett, marking his second stint in the AHL this season.

Melindy joined Gwinnett via assignment on December 6. While with the Gladiators, the defenseman appeared in 47 games, scoring two goals and seven assists for nine points. Melindy also accumulated 69 penalty minutes.

The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league, and are affiliated with the Arizona Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth - where parking is always free.
