NORFOLK, VA - Miroslav Svoboda made 34 saves on 37 shots while Brett McKenzie added one goal and two assists (1G,2A) to pace the Atlanta Gladiators past the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday night at Scope. Despite the loss, Norfolk drops to (8-4-0-0 16 points) on the year but maintains sole possession of first place in the South Division. .
The Admirals jumped on the board first courtesy of a Luke Nogard goal. Atlanta couldn't clear the zone, which allowed the Admirals to keep the puck in the Atlanta end. McMorrow along the boards found Alberga, who passed the puck from in the right circle, took a deflection off an Atlanta stick right to Nogard, who made no mistake and beat Svoboda over the glove to give the Admirals an early 1-0 lead at 4:32 of the first period.
The Admirals expanded their lead to 2-0 at 6:47 of first period. Connor Hurley cleared the puck from the defensive zone and found Duffy who got the puck in front of the Atlanta bench, and skated into the zone. The effort by Duffy, outpacing the defender, led to a two on one for Norfolk. Duffy skated in with the puck from along the boards into the left circle, before finding Cammarata on a back-door feed, for an easy tap in goal.
Atlanta got on the board as Brett McKenzie found a puck in front of Brad Barone and found the back of the net. Barone went to play the puck out of the zone around the wall, and it was kept in by Shane Eiserman. Eiserman played the puck from along the wall and found Brett McKenzie low in the slot, who shot the puck and beat Barone stick side. This cut the Admirals lead to 2-1 at 16:18 of the first period.
Atlanta would even the score at two. While on the powerplay, Atlanta got the puck into the Norfolk zone. Ben Danford shot the puck from in the right circle, which was initially saved by Barone. Alex Overhardt, while standing just outside the goalie crease, found the rebound, and was able to get it through the legs of Barone to tie the game at 19 seconds of the second period.
Atlanta took the lead after a power play goal from Olivier Galipeau. Jesse Gabrielle found the puck behind the net for the Gladiators and passed it along the near wall to Brett McKenzie. McKenzie passed the puck to the middle of the ice and found Laporte, who's slapshot from the point beat Barone stick side at 6:49 of the second period to give Atlanta the 3-2 lead.
Atlanta extended their lead with 14 seconds to go in the second period. Atlanta kept the puck in the Norfolk zone, and Jack Stander passed the puck behind the net from along the far wall. Stander's pass connected with Shane Eiserman behind the net. Eiserman fed the puck from behind the net, to a waiting Nolan LaPorte who shot the puck beating Barone through the legs. This made the score 4-2 Atlanta with only seconds remaining in the second period.
Norfolk cut the Atlanta lead to 4-3 at 8:57 of the third period, with a tally from Taylor Cammarata. Cammarata had control of the puck behind the net and then passed it to Alberga along the back wall. Alberga, from along the back wall, passed the puck to Chase Harrison at the point. Harrison shot the puck and it was deflected by Cammarata in the air and found the back of the net.
Atlanta once again claimed a two-goal lead. Atlanta held the puck in the Norfolk zone. Olivier Galipeau from in the right circle found Brett McKenzie on a pass at the right point. McKenzie shot the puck, and it was deflected by Derek Nesbitt beating Brad Barone low on the left side to extend the Gladiators lead to 5-3 at 10:58 of the third period.
Brad Barone made 22 saves on 27 shots while Miroslav Svoboda made 34 saves on 37 shots and picks up his fourth win of the year for the Gladiators. The Admirals hit the road for a three-game road swing that begins at Jacksonville on Monday at 2:00 p.m. Fans can catch the game broadcast on Mixlr or on ECHL.TV
