Gladiators Fall to Ice Pilots, 7-6

Pensacola's Wes Mason tallied a hat trick and the Ice Pilots tallied four goals in the third period to knock off the Gladiators 7-6 in front of 6,233 on Friday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Chris Durno ripped a slap shot over the shoulder of Pensacola netminder Brian Eklund at 4:57 of the first period to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead. Steve Slonina picked up an assist on the goal as he moved the puck up the ice to Durno.

Pensacola tied the game at 1-1 on a defensive give away deep in the Gladiators zone. Brett Gibson capitalized and ripped a shot past Gladiators netminder Trevor Prior at 11:30 of the period.

Steve Slonina regained the lead at 17:40 of the period when he ripped a snap shot over the outstretched pad of Eklund. Kris Goodjohn and Joe Bourne added the assists on the goal.

With one second remaining in the period, Aaron Phillips tied the game up at 2-2 on the power play. Andre Holmqvist and Tyler Beechey set up the play to add assists on the goal.

Pensacola took its first lead of the game on their second power play goal 3:24 into the second period. Peter Fregoe ripped a shot past Prior off a feed from Corey Nielsen. Wes Mason also added an assist on the play as he hooked up with Nielsen to set up the goal.

Steve Slonina answered for the Gladiators to tie the game up at 3-3 when he slipped into the slot and ripped a shot past Eklund at 5:31 of the period for the unassisted goal.

Chris Durno added his second goal of the game on the power play half way through the middle stanza to give the Gladiators a 4-2 lead. Durno, with another precision shot over the shoulder of Eklund, took a pass from Jim Jackson off a feed from Troy Milam on the power play goal.

Anthony Aquino bet Eklund on a rebound 52 seconds later to push the Gladiators lead to 5-3. Brandon Dietrich and Paul Flache each added an assist on the goal.

Pensacola cut the Gladiators lead to one just 1:29 into the third period on a goal by Wes Mason. Jeremy Van Hoof added the assist on the goal.

Jean Francois Soucy tied the game at 5-5 less than five minutes into the third period. Van Hoof and Mason hooked up on the play to add the assists on the power play goal.

Wes Mason added his second goal of the game at 8:26 of the third on the power play. Holmqvist and Nielsen added the assists on the goal.

Kevin Doell tied the game up at 6-6 at 15:12 of the third as he rolled the puck past Eklund. Jim Jackson added an assist on the goal.

Wes Mason capped a hat trick 66 seconds later as he beat Prior with the game winner. Jade Galbraith and Fregoe picked up the helpers on the goal.

Pensacola went 3-for-5 on the man advantage while the Gladiators capitalized on one of their four power play opportunities. Trevor Prior made 19 saves while Brian Eklund turned aside 50 Gladiator shots in the loss.
