February 22, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Andy Brandt notched two goals in the Gwinnett Gladiators 6-3 victory over South division rival Florida Everblades at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Sunday afternoon. The Gladiators returned home after their three-game road trip in which they played the Mississippi Sea Wolves three times this past week in Biloxi.
Myles Stoesz gave Gwinnett the early lead with a goal at the 22 second mark of the first period, but the Gladiators' lead did not last long as Milan Gajic put one in the net for the Everblades 42 seconds later to even the score. The Gladiators re-took the lead at 14:29 with a power play goal from Dirk Southern which found its way to the top left corner of the net. Jordan Fox and Jeff Mason notched helpers on Southern's goal.
Andy Brandt increased the Gladiators' lead to three when he picked up the puck in neutral zone and took it to the net and put it in past Florida goalie Anton Khudobin. Brandt's marker at 56 seconds into the second period broke a 12-game scoreless streak for the forward; his last goal came against the Everblades on January 24th.
Stealing the puck from a Florida player off the face-off, Dan Sullivan notched his 10th assist of the season when he passed the puck to Adam Berti who notched the Gladiators' fourth goal of the contest. Until last night's 4-3 shootout loss against the Mississippi Sea Wolves, Sullivan had played in 11 games without notching one point.
In the third period, Fox increased the goal differential by one with a goal at 9:44. Florida notched two more goals in the period within a minute of each other, but it was too little, too late for the Everblades as Brandt put his second goal of the night into Florida's empty net to give Gwinnett the 6-3 victory. Brennan Turner notched his second assist of the night and goalie Dan Turple notched an assist on Brandt's goal as well.
The Gladiators will next take on the Charlotte Checkers on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 7:35 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
