ECHL Reading Royals

Royals Stung By South Carolina

February 22, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (17-33-4= 38; 7th North Division) of the ECHL were unable to break through in seven tries with the power play, while the South Carolina Stingrays bagged a couple of power play goals in a 4-1 win over the Royals at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. This game marked the twenty-second time this season that the Royals' power play has been held off the board-and the tenth time this season that the team's offense was held to one goal or less (0-10-0). Michael Ouzas (loss, 16-15-1; 28/31; 1 eng) suffered the loss. South Carolina's Jonathan Boutin (win, 17-7-2; 30/31) kept the Royals at bay in the opportunities that the team was able to create.

South Carolina struck on their first power play chance of the evening when Maxime Lacroix stuffed back the rebound after Ouzas had stopped Nate Kiser's slap shot from the point at the 7:29 into the first period. 1:46 later, a Royals' defensive zone turnover resulted into a Trent Campbell snap shot from the high slot that beat Ouzas high to the blocker side to make it 2-0 Stingrays. South Carolina bagged their second power play goal of the game with just 20 seconds left in the second period, when defenseman Josh Godfrey fired a shot from the high slot that appeared to deflect off a Reading player out front and wind up in the net. Reading got what would be the team's only goal of the night with just 4.4 seconds remaining in the second, when Scott Estey, playing in his first ECHL game, found a seam down the slot and ripped a snap shot behind Boutin. But that would be all the Royals would get, as the power play sputtered throughout the game-but particularly in the third period when Reading had three chances with the man advantage. South Carolina's Travis Morin added an empty netter with 1:52 left in the game to ice what proved to be the sixteenth regulation loss at home this year for Reading (8-16-0).

The Royals travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on the Cincinnati Cyclones on Tuesday (February 24 @ 7:30 pm) at U.S. Bank Arena. Tuesday's game will be broadcast live on the Royals Radio Network Presented by Transmissions by Arbogast (True Oldies WRAW 1340 am in Reading; and The Ticket WLAN 1390 am in Lancaster), as well as on the internet via webcast hosted by Sportsjuice.com, which can be accessed through the Royals website.
