Johnstown, PA- Specialty Teams dominated this afternoons ECHL contest at the War Memorial in Johnstown, PA. The Elmira Jackals and Johnstown Chiefs combined for eight specialty teams tallies in the contest including three Johnstown power play goals in the first period to hold a 6-2 first period advantage. Despite a hard working effort from Elmira, the Chiefs held on for a 7-4 win in front of a crowd of 1,934.
The Chiefs opened the scorning 2:56 in with a goal from Blair Yaworski. The Chiefs then added their second of the contest at the 6:17 mark when Toby LaFrance beat Elmira goaltender Mitch O'Keefe. The Jackals pulled within one with a Moises Gutierrez power play tally at the 7:17 mark. Benoit Doucet and Steve Yetman assisted on the play. Johnstown then struck back with a Peter Pohl short handed breakaway goal at the 10:23 mark. Elmira countered with Mike Sgroi's eighth of the season at the 10:37 mark to make it 3-2. Wes Cunningham and Brandon Roach assisted on the power play tally. The Chiefs then struck for a flurry of power play goals. The first came at the 12:18 mark, Jarrett Konkles' 25th of the year. Konkle added his 26th of the season exactly one minute later. Johnstown ended the first period with their third power play goal in less than ten minutes of play, Todd Griffiths' 6th of the year. Johnstown went 3-4 on the power play while the Jackals went 2-4. Elmira trailed the shot category 12-11 at the end of one.
After the eight goal first period the offense slowed down in the second. The Jackals owned the only goal in the middle frame. Paul McIlveen and Mike Sgroi set up Steve Yetman for his 19th goal of the season and second of the weekend at the 8:32 mark. The Jackals dominated the shot category at 17-12 in the middle period adding to the 28-24 two period total.
The third period was the least eventful of the three. The Jackals had attempts on a five on three power play but Chief goalkeeper Kyle Gajewski made two fabulous saves. The Jackals found an answer for Gajewski at the 18:38 mark of the third period when Paul McIlveen netted a shorthanded tally to bring the game to 6-4. Johnstown added some insurance moments later with a Todd Griffith empty net, power play tally. In total eight specialty teams goals were scored in the 7-4 final.
With the loss the Jackals fall to a 28-21-1-4 record, while the Chiefs improve to 31-20-2-0.
NEXT UP: The Jackals travel to Dayton this Wednesday the 25th of February, for a (7:00 p.m.) tilt with the Bombers before visiting Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday the 27th and 28th of February, for 7:30 p.m. contests each night.
