Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Bakersfield, CA - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met for the second straight day on Sunday afternoon. Victoria started Todd Ford in net while Bakersfield countered with Dave McKee.
The first period had excitement on both ends, but only the Salmon Kings were able to get on the scoreboard. Jordie Benn cut down the ice on a 3-on-2 with Wes Goldie and Brady Leavold. Benn moved into the zone and cut to the left side wall. Just as the defender got to him the rookie defender threaded a beautiful pass to the far post to a hard charging Goldie who tipped it past McKee for the 1-0 lead. The Condors had a glorious opportunity of their own when Chad Painchaud came down the right side on a 3-on-2. Painchaud cut past the Salmon Kings defender, threw a beautiful cross-crease pass to Mark Derlago. Derlago tipped the puck, but Ford got across to rob the Condor and kept the score 1-0 through the first period.
The Condors tied the game up on a rocket of a shot from Painchaud. Derlago crossed the blueline into the Kings' zone going down the left side. He dropped the pass for Painchaud who fired the one-time slap shot top corner blocker side past Ford. The Condors took the lead when Dave Bonk fed a cross-crease pass to Derlago, and this time the Condors' sniper hit pay dirt beating Ford. Bakersfield led 2-1 through 40 minutes.
Chris St. Jacques would tie the game when he beat McKee on the power play. The number one line for the Condors continued to click in the third period when Painchaud received a pass from Bonk and fired a one-timer past Ford. The Condors number one-line was not done yet; off a turnover Derlago received a pass from Painchaud and beat Ford to put the Condors up 4-2. Derlago would add another goal to complete the hat trick. Condors 5 Salmon Kings 2.
Victoria finished 1/3=33.3% on the power play, while Bakersfield finished 0/4=0%. The Condors out shot the Salmon Kings 36-30.
The Salmon Kings continue their 11-game road trip tomorrow when they travel to Ontario. Game time is 7:00 p.m. PST. The Salmon Kings return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday, March 11th to open a four-game set against the Ontario Reign. For tickets call 220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
