Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves remained atop the Western Division with a 5-1 series opening victory over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium.

Erie jumped ahead in the top of the first inning against Rumble Ponies starter Tony Dibrell. Derek Hill led off and reached on an error. He moved to second on an Isaac Paredes base hit and scored on a Jose Azocar sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

Binghamton tied the game in the home half of the first against SeaWolves starter Kyle Funkhouser. Jason Krizan doubled with one out and scored on a Patrick Mazeika two-out single. It would be the lone run of the game for the Ponies.

The SeaWolves broke open the game in the top of the sixth. Paredes, Azocar and Frank Schwindel all singled, loading the bases for Cam Gibson. Gibson belted a grand slam to right for a 5-1 Erie advantage. It was the fifth home run of the season for Gibson and his second in the past two games. It was also Erie's first grand slam of 2019.

Funkhouser (3-1) earned his third consecutive win allowing a run on five hits with a walk while tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts. He is 3-0 since returning from Triple-A Toledo and has fired back-to-back quality starts.

Dibrell (0-3) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts in five-plus innings.

Erie relievers Wladimir Pinto and Ethan DeCaster combined to keep the Rumble Ponies scoreless over the final three innings.

The SeaWolves and Rumble Ponies will play a doubleheader on Wednesday night beginning at 5:35 p.m. LHP Tarik Skubal (0-1, 2.79 ERA) takes the mound for Erie in game one while RHP Casey Mize (6-0, 1.99 ERA) goes in game two.
