San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants clinched a playoff berth following a 15-7 loss to the Bakersfield Blaze on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. The defeat eliminated Modesto from second half title contention and thereby secured a wild card spot for the Giants. It marks the 12th time in the last 13 years that San Jose has reached the postseason.

San Jose will play Bakersfield in the best-of-three North Mini Series beginning on Wednesday, September 7. The Giants host Game 1 on the 7th with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 7:00 PM. The series then shifts to Bakersfield for Game 2 on Thursday, September 8 and Game 3 on Friday, September 9 (if necessary). The winner of the Mini Series advances to play the first half champion Visalia Rawhide in the best-of-five Division Series starting on Saturday, September 10.

Wednesday's contest saw the Blaze plate six runs in the top of the first inning en route to the convincing win. Bakersfield smacked four home runs and finished with 16 hits in the victory.

Aramis Garcia (3-for-4, 2B) had three hits while Daniel Carbonell (1-for-2, 2 RBI) drove home a pair of runs to lead San Jose offensively in the loss.

The scoring began early as three straight one-out singles from Drew Jackson, Chantz Mack and Jay Baum off of Giants starter Jose Reyes produced a run in the top of the first. After Gianfranco Wawoe flied out, Joe DeCarlo stepped to the plate and belted a three-run home run to deep left. The round-tripper, DeCarlo's 14th of the season, gave the Blaze a 4-0 lead. The rally then continued with a walk to Austin Wilson before Braden Bishop homered down the left field line, his second of the season, for a 6-0 Bakersfield cushion.

Blaze starter Anthony Misiewicz began his outing with four scoreless innings as Bakersfield maintained their six-run lead. Robbie Garvey's bunt single in the bottom of the third was San Jose's only baserunner over the first four frames. The Blaze then padded their lead with another home run in the top of the fifth. A walk to Mack started the inning before Wawoe crushed a one-out home run to left. The two-run blast stretched the Bakersfield advantage to 8-0.

The Giants pulled to within 8-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. T.J. Bennett led off with a single before Garcia doubled to deep left center putting runners on second and third. Carbonell then lined a single into center plating both runners. After the next two batters were retired, Ronnie Jebavy hammered a double down the left field line bringing home Carbonell with the third run of the inning.

The Blaze though answered with a three-run top of the seventh against reliever Alex Bostic (1 2/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO). A solo home run from Mack - Bakersfield's fourth homer of the night - started the inning. Then with two outs, Bishop delivered an RBI double before a wild pitch brought home another run to make it 11-3.

San Jose drew closer in the bottom of the seventh scoring four times against the Blaze bullpen. Garcia led off with a single before Carbonell drew a walk. Cristian Paulino then hit a slow roller along the third base line. The third baseman DeCarlo fielded the ball, but threw wildly to first and down the right field line. Paulino was credited with a single on the play while the error allowed both Garcia and Carbonell to score cutting the Bakersfield lead to 11-5. Garvey then struck out before a walk to Jebavy. Back-to-back RBI singles from Rando Moreno and Miguel Gomez then trimmed the Blaze advantage to 11-7 and moved the potential tying run into the on-deck circle. However, Jonah Arenado followed by grounding into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Bakersfield then took back control of the game with a three-run top of the eighth. With Wilson Santos (2/3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO) on the mound, Jackson led off with a single before Mack walked. The runners then advanced on a Baum groundout before Wawoe lined a two-RBI single into center. Wawoe would later score on a Bishop RBI groundout to make it 14-7.

Baum capped the scoring for the night with a two-out RBI double in the top of the ninth off of Dusten Knight (1 2/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) extending the Blaze lead to 15-7.

Misiewicz (7-10) picked-up the win after tossing six innings with three runs (all earned) allowed. He surrendered five hits, struck out six and did not issue a walk.

Reyes (4-6) yielded eight runs (all earned) on nine hits over the first five innings to take the loss. The right-hander walked two and struck out four.
