September 1, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Stockton Ports News Release

Ports utility player Melvin Mercedes is set to make history at Banner Island Ballpark this Saturday, September 3rd, as he is scheduled to play all nine positions during the game.

In the 2016 season thus far, Mercedes has played seven of the nine positions, missing time only at first base and catcher. During his two appearances as pitcher, Mercedes posted a 3.86 ERA with two strikeouts.

The New York native is currently in his second season with the Ports, having originally been drafted in the 16th round of the First-Year Player Draft in 2012. Mercedes is currently hitting .254 on the year in his 335 at-bats.

"Mel is the consummate team player and to give him an opportunity to showcase his skills in a game of this nature will be a baseball experience that he'll never forget," said Ports Manager Rick Magnante. "We're sure the fans in Stockton will enjoy it, as well."

Nathan Orf of the Brevard County Manatees was the most recent Minor League Baseball player to accomplish the feat in 2014, while four players have done it at the Major League level.

Additionally on Saturday, the Ports will have their annual Hometown Hero Night, complete with postgame fireworks presented by Food 4 Less and Rancho San Miguel Markets. For tickets or for more information, please contact the Ports front office at 209-644-1900, visit stocktonports.com, or stop by the Stockton Ports Box Office.
