Oshawa Generals News Release
Kingston, Ontario - The K-Rock Centre was anything but friendly to the Generals Friday night: the Frontenacs beat Oshawa by a convincing 7-0 score before an excited home crowd of 2419 in Kingston.
After a moving Remembrance Day ceremony, the Frontenacs were quick off the hop opening scoring at 3:02. Taking full advantage of a 3-on-2, Captain, Tyler Brown, picked the top right corner on Generals goaltender, Daniel Altshuller, putting Kingston out in front 1-0.
At the other end of the rink, Kingston net-minder, Igor Bobkov, faced his first major test courtesy of Oshawa's penalty-kill. Short-handed, Cole Cassels broke in from the left side, but his hard, low wrist shot didn't have enough mustard to squeeze by the glove hand of the Fronts goaltender.
Oshawa's penalty-kill was perfect in the opening frame due in large part to Altshuller: he made two tremendous pad saves on point blank shots fired by Ryan Spooner. The Generals goaltender also made a miraculous glove save through traffic with 30 seconds to go in the period. At the end of 1, Oshawa had a 10-9 shot advantage but found themselves down 1-0 on the scoreboard.
Early in the second period, Altshuller owned the highlight reel. First, he calmly blocked a short-side breakaway attempt by David Mazurek and bailed out his falling defenseman in the process. Next, he made a sprawling save taking away the bottom half of the net from Ryan Spooner who seemed to have a sure goal.
Unfortunately, Oshawa ran into penalty trouble and Cody Alcock uncorked a lightning quick one-timer from the right circle on the power play making it a 2-0 Kingston lead. The dam continued to collapse when Spooner netted another power play goal from the point, a wrist shot through traffic. Kingston added a fourth goal before the period was through putting the Generals in a 4-0 hole.
Positives for Oshawa included keeping pace with Kingston at 24 shots apiece through two periods of play, but dangerous scoring opportunities definitely favoured the home team. Still, Daniel Maggio made an excellent defensive stick check to derail a possible breakaway, and Scott Sabourin's physical game was dominant in the second frame. None of this changed the fact that Oshawa was down by a quartet heading into the third.
Generals head coach, Gary Agnew, stuck with Altshuller to start the third - a clear indication that the score didn't reflect the goaltender's play. Regrettably, the situation didn't get any easier as the Frontenacs scored 3 more goals including Spooner's second of the night, a beautiful glove side bullet that he kicked up to his stick blade before shooting.
Kingston outshot Oshawa 27-24 on the night.
Oshawa plays their first of back-to-back home games tomorrow night, Saturday November 12th vs. the Ottawa 67's at the General Motors Centre. Start time is 7:05 PM.
The Generals take on the Belleville Bulls at home this Sunday November 13th. Puck drops at 6:05 PM.
