Saginaw Falls to Ottawa 6-5 in Shootout

On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit fell to the Ottawa 67's 6-5 in a shootout. John McFarland scored four goals and recorded one assist in the contest. Garret Ross scored the other goal for the Spirit. Jake Paterson stopped 49 shots in net for the Spirit

Ottawa got out to a quick start scoring 26 seconds into the game with a goal by Shane Prince. Seven minutes later, Saginaw would answer with John McFarland first goal of the game with assists to Steven Strong and Michael Fine. Ottawa would answer back to take a 2-1 lead, but McFarland would net his second goal moments later to tie the game going into the first intermission.

The lone goal in the second period was scored by Ottawa's Jake Caldwell, shorthanded at 6:50.

The Spirit came out on a roll in the third period, with a goal 20 seconds in by John McFarland for the hat trick. McFarland would net his fourth of the game six minutes later to put the Spirit up 4-3, their first lead of the game. Saginaw would take a two goal lead with 10:27 remaining, with a goal from Garret Ross, assisted by John McFarland. Ottawa would come storming back on the power play late in the period, as Tyler Toffoli scored to put the 67's within one. A little over a minute later Michal Cajkovsky would tie the game 5-5.

Overtime would not prove decisive enough as the game went into a shootout, Saginaw's first shootout of the year. After seven shooters, the 67's would prevail, scoring two shootout goals to the Saginaw's one. John McFarland would be the lone goal scorer for the Spirit.
