Greensboro Generals News Release

GREENSBORO—The Greensboro Generals had the opportunity to have a season long five game winning streak extended, however the Charlotte Checkers under the guidance of newly hired Head Coach Derek Wilkinson in his first game at the bench, had other ideas when they earned a 5-3 victory. In front of 3,295 on-hand at the Greensboro Coliseum, the Generals will now turn to a road trip that begins with the Mississippi Sea Wolves.

The first period scoring began with an end of a streak, when Jamie Hodson was outside of the net to send the puck into the Generals (26-17-1) offensive zone and a miscue allowed Charlotte to score for the first time on Hodson in 157:25. However, Greensboro would retaliate with a shot coming off the stick of defenseman Geno Parrish. Parrish scored his fifth goal of the season, on an assist from Matt Elich and Eric Fortier, sent the puck top shelf grazing the bar past Checkers (20-18-5) David St. Germain.

Scoring would continue to go back-and-forth between the two teams, the first coming when Matt Elich netted his 19th goal of the season, cutting between Charlotte defenders to send a pass from Geno Parrish, top shelf for the second Greensboro lead of the evening at the 13:31 mark. The Checkers would respond just over two minutes later, as Nick Bilotto converted the first Charlotte power-play of the game, trickling the puck past a flailing Jamie Hodson in net.

In the third, with both teams managing 12 shots on goal, Charlotte would take a shorthanded goal by Konrad McKay gave the Checkers their first lead of the game at the 4:13 mark. Greensboro's Bryson Busniuk would tied the game up at 3-3, when he skated in front of a Checkers defender, then beat him between the face-off circles just 47 seconds later. The Checkers would then take the lead for good, when from the left face-off circle, Mike Wirll sent the game winner past Jamie Hodson. Charlotte would add an empty netter as Dusty Jamieson got past the Generals defense for the final goal, making the tally 5-3.
