Generals sign a pair of Icemen
September 12, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greensboro Generals News Release
Greensboro, NC â The Greensboro Generals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) have announced the signing of two defensemen, inking Chris Allen and Alex Andreyev to deals. Both players suited up for the B. C. (Binghamton, NY) Icemen in the United Hockey League last season.
Allen will get his first taste of the ECHL after spending the majority of his career in the American Hockey League. In fact, the 24-year old made his pro debut right here in the Greensboro Coliseum for the Carolina Monarchs in 1997 following a stellar junior career. Allen also had the opportunity to play two games in the National Hockey League with the Florida Panthers, who drafted him in the third round of the 1996 draft. Allen notched a goal and nine assists for ten points in 25 games for the Icemen last year in an injury-shortened season. Allen's best year was his first full year as a pro, when he scored 35 points (8g, 27a) for the AHL's Beast of New Haven in 1998-99. For his career, the 6'2", 195-pound defenseman has piled up 16 goals and 45 assists for 61 points in 147 games, with over 100 of those games in the AHL.
Andreyev, 23, is an imposing figure on the blue line, standing 6'4" and weighing 230 pounds. The Riga, Latvia native has only four goals and 17 assists in 136 career games, but his bread and butter is taking care of his own end and playing the physical side of the game, picking up 310 penalty minutes in those games. Andreyev has played each of the last three seasons with the Icemen following a brief stint in the ECHL with the Mississippi Sea Wolves.
"Chris was a highly regarded NHL prospect just a couple of years ago, and he'll provide us with a tremendous shot from the point," says Generals head coach Rick Adduono (ah-DOO-no). "If he plays up to his capabilities, he could be one of the best in the league. Alex will help us by utilizing his size and playing physical in the defensive end. He can also play forward if need be, so his versatility makes him very appealing"
The Generals are up to nine players under contract for the upcoming season. A current list of Generals players follows this release. Greensboro's season opener is slated for Friday, October 11 at 7:30 at the Lexington Men O'War. The Generals' home opener is Friday, October 25 at 7:30 against the Reading Royals. Opening night is Hooters Magnetic Schedule Night, with the first 2,000 fans entering the building receiving a Generals 2002-2003 schedule. The Generals are currently selling season tickets for all 36 home games for as low as $255.00 for goal view seats. Anyone purchasing season tickets will receive a season parking pass absolutely free while supplies last.
