December 4, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
Kenny Appleby and the Oshawa Generals visited the Peterborough Petes tonight and came out with a 6-0 win. This marks Oshawa's 21st win and Appleby's fourth shutout this season.
The first twenty minutes was evenly matched with both teams showing lots of energy. Peterborough had the first three shots on net with just over five minutes in while the Generals got their first chance with a quick break by Bradley Latour. Jonathan Ang had a breakaway of his own but Joe Manchurek showed off his defensive skills to prevent a chance. The first goal of the game came 16:39 in from Michael Dal Colle, assisted by Josh Sterk and Chris Carlisle on a two-on-one play. This extended Dal Colle's point streak to 13 games. The Petes came back with some good pressure near the end of the period but Appleby and the Generals were able to hold the lead. Both Appleby and Mancina were strong between the pipes, stopping some great chances all period. Shots on net were close after twenty with10-8 for the Gens.
The second period started with solid pressure from both sides. Nick Ritchie, who was recently invited to the National Junior Team Selection Camp, had a couple good chances for the Petes but could not get anything past Appleby. At 6:36 in the second period, Dal Colle picked up his second goal of the game with a wicked wrist shot on Mancina. Dal Colle's second goal marked his 20th of the season. Connor Boland received the first penalty of the night almost nine minutes into the second, for tripping. Despite not finding the net on the power play, Josh Brown put the Generals up 3-0 with less than a minute left in the second at even strength. Latour and Carlisle were credited for the third goal.
It was a strong third period for the Generals who scored another three goals in just under 11 minutes. The first came from Latour, assisted by Michael Turner only a couple minutes in. A few minutes later Mancina made a big save on Sterk but Anthony Cirelli was there to shoot it home. The assists on Cirelli's goal went to Dal Colle and Sterk, which gave them three points each tonight. With roughly nine minutes left in the game, Tobias Lindberg showed off his speed and put the pack past Mancina. Lindberg's goal, assisted by Sonny Hertzberg and Stephen Desrocher, made it his 30th point for the 2014-15 season. Appleby and the Generals stayed strong on defense for the remainder of the game. Appleby walked away with his fourth shutout this year, the most among any OHL goalie this season.
The Generals came out with another big win over the Petes, after a 6-1 victory on Nov.9. The Generals are back in action tomorrow night in Sudbury to take on the Wolves in a 7:30p.m. start. They will be back on home ice Sunday Dec.7, when they play the Erie Otters for the first time this season. If you're attending Sunday's game, don't forget to wear a festive Christmas sweater in support of Children's Wish Foundation.
