Gaudreau, Cyclones Rally Past Toledo, 3-2
February 15, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Frederick Gaudreau potted the game-winning goal as part of a three-point night to lift the Cincinnati Cyclones (23-20-1-4) over the Toledo Walleye (29-10-3-2) by a 3-2 final score in front of 3,153 at U.S. Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Toledo struck first just 3:59 into the opening period when Martin Frk snapped in his 20th goal of the season after catching a perfect pass out of the corner from Shane Berschbach. The Cyclones would quickly respond, though, as Frederick Gaudreau fired home a power play goal at 7:07 from the high slot to knot things at one. Then, at 13:56, Branden Gracel hit Josh Shalla with a perfect cross ice pass who proceeded to beat Neil Conway (L, 22 saves, 5-3-2-1) with a shot right along the ice. And to seven great first period stops from Sam Brittain (W, 20 saves, 13-10-0-1) at the other end of the ice, Cincinnati carried the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
A very evenly played second period went nearly 20 minutes without a goal, as both teams buckled down defensively. Unfortunately, Toledo found the equalizer with just 1:30 remaining in the frame when Frk sent a laser accurate wrist shot past Brittain from outside the left circle to make it a 2-2 game through two.
The final period had a playoff feel, with both teams vying for two big North Divison points; however, in the early minutes of the third, neither side could pull ahead. At the 9:17 mark, though, a rare Toledo turnover set up the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal. Gaudreau cut down an outlet pass, deked past a defender, and backhanded a beautiful shot over Conway's shoulder to give his team a 3-2 lead. With less than two minutes to play, the Walleye pulled the goaltender in an attempt to tie it with the extra skater - but to avail. Brittain made a coulple of critical saves as he and the Cyclones' defense sealed the one-goal win.
The Cyclones will be back on the ice at U.S. Bank Arena this Wednesday, February 18 as they play host to the Evansville IceMen at 7:30pm!
