Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The Lincoln Saltdogs handed a crushing defeat to their old rival St. Paul on Monday, knocking off the Saints 3-0 at Midway Stadium. The win by the Saltdogs puts St. Paul closer to elimination from the first-half North Division race in the American Association.

Lincoln starter Jarrett Gardner (3-2) put together his second dominant outing for the Dogs, pitching 7 2/3 scoreless innings and allowing only six hits. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second inning with a strikeout and a great catch by brand-new Saltdogs outfielder Skip Adams, and the Saints managed just three more hits the rest of the night. R.D. Spiehs pitched a perfect ninth inning for his second save.

Offensively, Lincoln was held in check by St. Paul starter Justin Lord (3-4) until the fourth inning, when Mario Delgado blasted a solo home run over the center-field wall. The Saltdogs added another run in the fifth when another brand-new Saltdog, Matt Maloney, hit a solo shot of his own out to left. The Dogs got their final run in the seventh when Maloney doubled and eventually scored on a Corey Harrington sacrifice fly.

Maloney ended his first night in a Lincoln uniform 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits and two runs scored. Shawn McGill also went 2-for-4, while Delgado's homer extended his hitting streak to nine games.

The Saltdogs and Saints play game two of their three-game series Tuesdsy night at 7:05. Brian Campbell is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln, while Luis Villareal is expected to start for St. Paul.
