SIOUX FALLS, SD -- Sioux Falls pounds out 16 hits as the Birds open up a 4 game lead on the St. Paul Saints in the North Divsion, beating Sioux City 9-2 at Birdcage on Monday night.

The game was close until the Birds sent 10 men to the plate in the 8th inning to break it wide open. The X's scored first on an unearned run in the 2nd on a fielders choice by Chad Gabriel and an errant throw by Josh Patton scored Juan Camacho. The only other run for the Explorers came in the 5th. With the bases loaded, the Canaries catcher Paul Smyth was throwing a ball back to his pitcher Travis Kane but the throw got away and Chad Gabriel was able to score.

Sioux Falls, meanwhile, scored 4 runs off of X's starter Tim Layden on 8 hits. The Birds got 1 unearned run in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th and 1 more in the 6th before their 5 run 8th.

Alex Llanos extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 1-4. That's a season high for the Explorers and the longest current streak in the American Association.

The X's will try to rebound on Tuesday night and will send Paige Dumont (1-1) to the mound while the Canaries will counter with Lenny Bays (1-1). Game time is 7:05 with coverage on 1360 KSCJ and on xsbaseball.com.
