Diablos rout Pelicans

The El Paso Diablos pounded out six runs in the seventh inning to blow out the Pensacola Pelicans 9-3 in the series opener on Monday night from Cohen Stadium.

Pensacola took an early lead in the top of the second inning. Cesar Aranguren blooped a two-RBI single into centerfield, giving Pensacola a 2-0 lead.

The Diablos answered in the bottom of the second inning. J.D Reininger had a run scoring single, plating Alex Derhak and cutting the deficit 2-1. El Paso tied up the contest in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Walter Olmstead grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Bryan Cooksey for the 2-2 tie.

The Pelicans broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning. Matt Pali belted a solo-homer to center field, for the 3-2 advantage.

The Diablos exploded for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Walter Olmstead had a two-RBI single and Matt Kent had a two-run double, pacing the overall attack. El Paso took an 8-3 lead into the eighth inning.

Aaron Marsden (1-0) threw a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout picking up his first victory as a Diablo.

Zach Cline (3-4) takes the loss. He threw six and a third innings allowing six earned runs off of six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Ben Thurmond threw six innings allowing three earned runs off of seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Justin Knoff threw two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game.

The Diablos win three straight for the first time in over a month. Pensacola has now dropped seven in a row.

The Diablos will take on the Pelicans in the second game of the series, at 7:05 PM on Tuesday night at Cohen Stadium. Adam Blackley gets the nod for El Paso against John Webb of the Pelicans. The game will be broadcast live on www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
