ECHL Adirondack Thunder

Gameday: Adirondack vs. Brampton

April 3, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight's matchup is the sixth and final meeting of the season between the Adirondack Thunder and the Brampton Beast. The Thunder have taken each of the previous five meetings between the squads and have scored 22 goals in the series to date. The Thunder took last night's game by a 3-1 final, the closest meeting between the teams since October, when the Thunder won 5-4 in overtime on the road.

TWO SHAKES OF A LOMB'S TAIL: Forward Ryan Lomberg got the scoring started for the Thunder last evening with a power-play goal late in the first period to knot the game at one. Lomberg, who was named the game's first star for his efforts, hit the 30-point mark in 38 games with his goal last evening. Lomberg's 17 goals rank second on the Thunder roster behind only Michael Kirkpatrick (26).

PLAYOFF PRIMER: With wins in each of the past two games, the Thunder moved their magic number down to four on both the Kalamazoo Wings and Elmira Jackals with four games to play. Adirondack can drop that number to as low as 2 with a win today but cannot clinch a playoff berth this afternoon as both the Wings and Jackals are idle.

THE BEST A MAN KEN GET: Netminder Ken Appleby turned in his second straight strong performance as he earned another win for the Thunder, allowing just one goal for the second straight night. Appleby led the Thunder in net for much of the season before a recall to the AHL with Albany in late January. Appleby's win was his fifth in his past six ECHL starts and over that span the former Oshawa General has amassed a .963 save percentage and a 1.17 goals against average.

POWER HITTERS: The Thunder converted on the power play for the second straight game on home ice, the first time since February 5 and 6, against Norfolk, that they have done so. The Thunder power-play has struggled at home this season, ranking just 26th in the ECHL, but the road unit has brought up the overall total, coming in at 21.5%, ranking fourth in the league.

ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL: The Thunder added defenseman Alex Wall to their roster yesterday and the St. John's, NFLD native made his professional debut in last night's win over the Beast. Wall joined the Thunder from the University of New Brunswick, where he won a University Cup just two weeks ago. Wall collected 60 points (16-44-60) in 122 career collegiate games and played with current Thunder teammate Dana Fraser at both UNB and the University of Prince Edward Island.

BEASTING THE BEAST: Thunder center Michael Kirkpatrick has thrived against the Beast, with eight points (4-4-8) in five games, bolstered by an assist in last night's win. With helper last night, Peter MacArthur has now collected four points (1-3-4) in two games against the Beast this season, while Ryan Lomberg and Louick Marcotte have each collected four points (2-2-4) in five games played.
