April 3, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced a transaction, which takes effect immediately. Wheeling has added forward Shane Bakker to its roster, after he was released from his PTO with the St. John's IceCaps.
Bakker, 28, rejoins the Nailers for the first time since early February, when he helped the team complete a 3-0-1 road trip against the Elmira Jackals, Brampton Beast, and Cincinnati Cyclones, picking up an assist in the finale. Shane, who is the team captain for the second consecutive year, has appeared in 21 games in his third season with Wheeling, recording seven assists and 55 penalty minutes. In 113 career games with the Nailers, the Navan, Ontario native has produced ten goals, 28 assists, 38 points, and 233 penalty minutes.
This was the second straight season in which Bakker spent time in the AHL. In 2014-15, he suited up in 15 tilts with the Hamilton Bulldogs, who served as the Montreal Canadiens' AHL affiliate, notching one assist and 37 penalty minutes. This season, Shane netted his first AHL goal with the St. John's IceCaps, while adding 46 penalty minutes in 11 games. The goal was scored on March 8th against the Binghamton Senators, and one of the assists was awarded to 2016 NHL All-Star Captain John Scott.
Shane Bakker will join the Nailers on Sunday afternoon, when they visit the Toledo Walleye at 5:15. Wheeling will then return home on Friday for the regular season home finale, which is Main Street Bank Fan Appreciation Night. One lucky fan will get the chance to shoot to win a car from Whiteside, plus it's a Flat Screen Friday Presented by the Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, a Frosty Friday, and Blades for Grades. The Nailers also invite their fans to attend the Team Awards and Playoff Rally at Undo's in Elm Grove on Wednesday at 7:00.
