Independence, Missouri - The Allen Americans completed the weekend sweep of the Missouri Mavericks with a 3-2 win on Saturday night in Missouri in front of 5,187 at Independence Events Center.
David Makowski scored the game winner for Allen for the second night in a row, and earned the number one star of the game for a second consecutive game, scoring his 15th goal of the season on the power play to give Allen the lead for good in the second period.
"It was a great team win, said Makowski. "We came in here with plans to get four points and nothing less. "Picking up six out of eight points against these guys on back to back weekends feels good."
Missouri pulled the goaltender for the second night in a row putting on great pressure down the stretch, but Americans rookie goalie Jake Hildebrand had an answer for every Missouri shot, as the Americans held off the top team in the ECHL.
"It was big for us to come into this building and take both games," said Americans Head Coach Steve Martinson. "We had production from multiple lines, and our goalie was really good."
Tristan King (13) and Spencer Asuchak (3) also scored for Allen. Asuchak's goal tied the score in the second period, 16 seconds after Missouri had taken the lead for the first time.
Chad Costello's assist on David Makowski's game winner extended his point streak to a season high 16 games, and moves him to within a game of tying the club record 17, set by Nino Musitelli in the 2010-2011 season, and Chad Costello last year.
The Americans outshot the Mavericks 27-22 for the game. Allen & Missouri both finished the night 1 for 5 on the power play. The Americans power play remains tops in the ECHL at 21.7% (57 for263).
The Americans return home to play the Evansville IceMen for the first time ever next Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Tickets for the final three regular season home games are on sale at Allen Event Center Box Office or call (972) 912-1000. www.allenamericans.com.
