Nailers Fight Hard to Earn Point in Toledo
April 3, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
TOLEDO, OH - The Wheeling Nailers didn't get the final result they were hoping for on Sunday afternoon, but they made sure to leave Huntington Center with at least one point in their back pockets. Anton Zlobin scored the lone goal in regulation, and Franky Palazzese made 29 saves. However, 18 seconds into overtime, the Toledo Walleye prevailed 2-1 on Tyson Spink's winning tally.
Both teams found the back of the net during an evenly played first period. The first goal went to Toledo at the 12:06 mark. Wheeling turned the puck over in its own zone, with Kyle Bonis making the interception. Bonis made a pass to Tyson Spink, before getting the return feed, which he roofed into the top-right corner of the net. 3:09 later, the Nailers tied the score. Anton Zlobin drove his way into the offensive zone, twirling around the right circle, then curling into the high slot, where he picked the launched a shot over Jeff Lerg's glove.
The final two periods of regulation turned into a chess match, as chances were had, but the defenses and goaltenders made sure to preserve the tie, earning each team a point. The 1-1 game ended up going to overtime, which was decided in extremely quick fashion. The Spink twins for the Walleye went to work with Tyson passing to Tylor, and Tylor returning the feed to Tyson, who slammed in a shot from the left side of the low slot for the 2-1 win.
Jeff Lerg got the win in goal for Toledo, making 24 saves on 25 shots. Franky Palazzese turned in another solid effort, but received the overtime defeat, after thwarting 29 of 31 attempts.
The Nailers will return home on Friday for the regular season home finale, which is Main Street Bank Fan Appreciation Night. One lucky fan will get the chance to shoot to win a car from Whiteside, plus it's a Flat Screen Friday Presented by the Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, a Frosty Friday, and Blades for Grades. The Nailers also invite their fans to attend the Team Awards and Playoff Rally at Undo's in Elm Grove on Wednesday at 7:00.
