The SeaWolves jumped out to a lead on Saturday night at ARM & HAMMER Park but allowed seven unanswered runs, dropping the middle game of the series to the Trenton Thunder 7-4.
The SeaWolves got on the board first for the second straight game. In the top of the second with one out, Dominic Ficociello connected on a solo home run off of Justus Sheffield. The home run was his first of the season and it gave the SeaWolves a 1-0 lead.
Erie increased the lead with two outs in the top of the third. Mike Gerber singled to keep the inning alive and Christin Stewart blasted a two-run home run to right for a 3-0 lead. The home run for Stewart was his sixth and first on the road.
The SeaWolves then went ahead 4-0 in the top of the fifth. Gerber doubled with one out and scored on a two-out Gabriel Quintana base hit.
Trenton rallied against Erie starter Anthony Vasquez in the bottom of the fifth. Dante Bichette, Jr. led off and walked. Jorge Saez followed and reached on an error by Quintana at third, allowing Trenton runners on the corners with no outs. Thairo Estrada followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Bichette to make it 4-1. Jake Cave singled to bring the tying run to the plate in Gleyber Torres. Torres blasted a three-run home run to left, making it a 4-4 game.
Trenton then took its first lead of the game in the seventh against Erie reliever Sean Donatello. Estrada led off with a walk and Cave doubled him home for a 5-4 Thunder lead. Torres single home Cave with his fourth RBI of the game to make it 6-4. Torres would later scored on an error for a 7-4 Thunder advantage.
The SeaWolves would get the leadoff man in scoring position with no outs in the seventh, had the bases loaded with two outs in the eighth and had the leadoff man on in the ninth but could not score late.
Vasquez took the no-decision allowing a season-high four runs, three earned on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Matt Wotherspoon (1-1) earned the win in relief for Trenton tossing 1.1 scoreless frames, allowing two hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Donatello (1-2) took the loss for the SeaWolves allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts.
Cale Coshow earned his seventh save, retiring the final four hitters of the game.
The SeaWolves and Thunder play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at ARM & HAMMER Park. RHP Myles Jaye (0-1, 1.93 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against RHP Ronald Herrera (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
