Beeks Fires Seven Scoreless in 1-0 Win at Reading

Reading, PA - Jalen Beeks (3-1) hurled seven scoreless frames and Jake DePew knocked in the lone run, lifting the Portland Sea Dogs (10-8) to a 1-0 win over the Reading Fightin Phils (11-8) on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. Portland picked up their first 1-0 road win since August 21, 2014 at Harrisburg.

Jamie Callahan earned his second save in as many chances, working around a one-out double by Chace Numata. Austin Maddox pitched the eighth inning for his first hold of the year.

Portland beat reliever Joey DeNato (1-1), scoring in the seventh. Tzu-Wei Lin led off with a walk and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Rosario. After a wild pitch, DePew (2-for-4) blooped an RBI single to left.

Beeks has 14 consecutive scoreless frames, yielding just three hits on three walks and four strikeouts.

The Sea Dogs salvaged the final game of the series and improved to 4-2 against Reading this year. Aneury Tavarez went 1-for-3 with a walk and has reached base safely in 29 straight games, dating back to August 23, 2016.

Portland and the Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies affiliate) begin a three-game series on Monday night at Dunkin Donuts Park. LHP Trey Ball makes the start in Portland's first ever game in Hartford, Connecticut. The Yard Goats counter with RHP Ryan Castellani (1-2, 4.79).
