Game Preview: Swope Park Rangers at Tulsa Roughnecks FC
April 1, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sporting Kansas City II News Release
The Swope Park Rangers will look to build upon their season-opening victory last weekend when they travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to take on the Roughnecks at ONEOK Field on Saturday, April 2. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and will be live streamed on SportingKC.com.
The Rangers began their USL season in ideal fashion, claiming a 2-1 victory over Portland Timbers 2 in the club's inaugural game last Saturday at Children's Mercy Park. Second-half goals from Kevin Oliveira and Sporting KC loanee Daniel Salloi put SPR into a 2-0 lead before Nick Besler pulled a goal back for Timbers 2 in the final moments.
Tulsa also enjoyed a victorious start to their season, earning a 2-0 win over expansion side Rio Grande Valley FC last Saturday at ONEOK Field. An own goal and a spectacular volley from Carlos Martinez were enough to send the Roughnecks to an opening-day win, while goalkeeper Alex Mangels made 12 saves to shutout RGV.
The 2015 season marked Tulsa's expansion year in the USL, with the club posting an 11-11-6 record for 39 points and narrowly missing out on a playoff berth by three points after a seventh-place finish in the Western Conference. In 2015, Tulsa's home and away form was very similar, with the side going 6-6-2 at home and 5-5-4 on the road.
Saturday's matchup is the first of four games between the two teams this season, with the Rangers hosting Tulsa at Children's Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village on May 14 before returning to Tulsa on Aug. 6. The two sides will conclude their season series on Sept. 10 at Swope Soccer Village.
