LouCity to Open at Home vs. Red Bulls II
April 1, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville City FC coach James O'Connor will certainly hope to grab all three points this Saturday, at 3 p.m., against New York Red Bulls II in Louisville City FC's 2016 home opener at Louisville Slugger Field.
After a thrilling win at the death against the Charlotte Independence last Saturday, LouCity looks to continue its winning form. USL Player of the Week and LouCity goalkeeper Scott Goodwin made a sprawling game-saving stop on a 75th minute Charlotte penalty kick, and striker Cameron Lancaster entered as a 76th minute substitute before bending a free kick conversion in the 94th minute. Lancaster was also named to the USL Team of the Week.
Three Things To Watch
Super Subs or Starters? Some LouCity supporters were surprised to see Cameron Lancaster, a highly regarded striker that once played in the English Premier League, and wing Kadeem Dacres, who scored six goals and started most games in 2015, left out of O'Connor's starting XI against Charlotte. Both were inserted into the lineup late in the game, and it's safe to say they both made a huge impact. Dacres threatened to score several times after coming on for George Davis IV in the 57th minute. He also won a huge free kick that Lancaster, who came on in the 76th minute for Chandler Hoffman, eventually scored off of. It should be interesting to see whether O'Connor keeps the two super subs on the bench for late-game situations or if he makes some changes against New York.
Revenge is a Dish Best Served Purple: In 2015, Louisville City suffered two defeats at the hands of the Red Bulls. New York actually handed LouCity its first-ever home loss on June 20, 2015, at Slugger by a score of 2-0. Look for O'Connor and his men to be quite ready for Saturday's match.
Scott Goodwin vs. The World: Against Charlotte, Goodwin was a brick wall. The former University of North Carolina Tar Heel broke Independence supporters' hearts after a massive penalty save that allowed Lancaster to seal the game with his winning strike. O'Connor will hope for Goodwin to continue his impeccable form against New York on Saturday.
Entering 2016, Louisville City FC has returned 13 players from the 2015 roster - including reigning USL Goal of the Season winner Aodhan Quinn and former English Premier League striker Lancaster. New additions include MLS Cup-winning forward Chandler Hoffman, University of Louisville alumnus Paolo DelPiccolo and University of Kentucky alumnus Davis.
Following the season-opening win against the Charlotte, LouCity now returns to Louisville Slugger Field on April 2 to host New York Red Bulls II in the home opener, with a special 3 p.m. kickoff.
