Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC vs Arizona United SC

Sacramento Republic FC host Arizona United SC in their 2016 USL Home Opener on Saturday, Apr. 2. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PDT at Bonney Field. Gates open at 6 p.m. Limited tickets for the match are available at Ticketmaster.com.

This will be the seventh time that the clubs will meet, with Republic FC leading the all-time series 3-1-2. Last season, Republic FC went undefeated against Arizona United SC, winning the first meeting 2-1 on June 13, 2015 on late goals from midfielders Agustin Cazarez and Danny Barrera. The two clubs battled to a scoreless draw in the most recent matchup of the series on Sept. 19, 2015, at Bonney Field.

Republic FC enter the match after defeating Seattle Sounders FC 2 1-0 in the their USL season opener on Friday, Mar. 25. Forward Thomas Stewart's penalty kick goal was enough as the defense and goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek earned their first shutout of the season.

Defender Chris Christian was named to the USL Team of the Week for his performance against S2. Christian was part of a defense that included Derek Foran, James Kiffe, Emrah Klimenta and Jakubek who limited S2 to just one shot on goal the entire match.

Stewart's penalty kick goal in the 63rd minute was his third goal against S2 in just two appearances against them all-time. The goal also moved him into second place all-time in Republic FC history for goals scored. It was also Stewart's first attempted penalty kick since joining the club in 2014.

The match is the third match in a five-match road stretch to start of the season for Arizona United SC. The club enter Saturday's match after starting the season with a 0-2 loss to LA Galaxy II on Saturday, Mar. 26, but winning their most recent match with a 2-0 victory against S2 on Wednesday, Mar. 30.

Arizona is led by their goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski who had 130 saves in 27 appearance last season. Woszczynski has stayed true to form with five saves in two matches this season. Last season, Woszczynski had 12 saves against Republic FC in two matches, including seven in the scoreless draw on Sept. 19.

Forward Chris Cortez, who scored a goal and added an assist against S2 on Wednesday, leads Arizona's offense. Last season, Cortez scored six goals and recorded two assists for Orange County Blues FC.
