San Antonio FC Travels to Seattle for First Match in Club History
April 1, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio FC will play the first match of its inaugural season on Sunday, April 3 at 7 p.m. when they face Seattle Sounders 2 at Starfire Stadium. The team aims to open its first ever season with a win ahead of its home opener on Saturday, April 9.
San Antonio heads into the season following an undefeated preseason campaign, where they earned six wins and two draws. The team tallied 17 goals and conceded only four in a string of challenging matches that included opponents Rayo OKC of the NASL and new USL rivals Rio Grande Valley FC. The club will now look to carry its momentum into the season and start strong away from home.
Forward Jason Johnson will lead the attack for SAFC after quickly finding his form in the preseason, netting five goals and recording one assist. The Jamaican international recently spent time with the Chicago Fire first team in MLS, and has represented his country on three occasions over the course of his career.
At the helm of the team is Head Coach Darren Powell, who brings over 15 years of coaching experience to San Antonio, including two seasons as the director of Orlando City's Pro Academy and nine seasons as head coach of Division 1 school Elon University.
The Sounders are still in pursuit of their first win of the season after starting their 2016 campaign with losses to Sacramento Republic FC and Arizona United, respectively. The team is looking to improve on its 13-12-3 record from their 2015 inaugural season, where they scored a total of 45 goals and conceded 42.
San Antonio FC will host Swope Park Rangers at Toyota Field on April 9 at 7:30 p.m. the following week as the team takes the field in front of its fans for the first time in franchise history.
Spurs Sports & Entertainment revealed the identity of San Antonio FC at a special event on Feb. 4 after the United Soccer League awarded San Antonio the 31st USL expansion franchise a month prior. The club will share its inaugural season along with league newcomers FC Cincinnati, Orlando City B, Swope Park Rangers, and Rio Grande Valley FC.
