OC Blues Sign Sacramento Republic's Ivan Mirkovic
April 1, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Orange County SC News Release
IRVINE, Calif. - One game into the 2016 season, Orange County Blues FC has acquired Serbian midfield enforcer Ivan Mirkovic of Sacramento Republic FC.
"I am excited to join OC Blues FC and I'm very excited for a new challenge in my career," said Mirkovic. "When the [regular season] champions are interested in you, then you must not hesitate for a single second and I am looking forward to what lies ahead."
Just days into the 2016 USL season, the OC Blues are already making moves with the key addition of Mirkovic. Originally from Belgrade Serbia, Mirkovic has spent the past two seasons with USL Western Conference foe, Sacramento Republic FC.
"We are thrilled to bring in one of the most dynamic and respected midfielders in the league for the past two seasons," said head coach and GM Oliver Wyss. "Ivan is a true champion and his leadership will have a tremendous impact on the team."
In Republic FC's inaugural season, Mirkovic started all 27 USL matches and played 2,324 minutes, leading his side to the 2014 USL Championship. He was a major contributor again in 2015, appearing in 32 total matches and playing over 2000 minutes for the second consecutive season.
The 5'7" midfielder played his college soccer with Fresno Pacific University, where he helped his side reach the NCCAA National Championship and was voted Tournament Defensive MVP. Mirkovic played in the PDL for the Ventura Fusion and appeared in 20 matches before signing his first professional contract with the Republic.
The addition of Mirkovic will boost an already outstanding midfield for the OC Blues. It will be exciting to see how Mirkovic links up with fellow Serbian Pavle Popara and Swiss midfielder Didier Crettenand.
Orange County Blues are back in action Saturday night at 7pm when they host St. Louis FC for the first time in club history. Season seats and single game tickets for the OC Blues 2016 campaign are now on sale. Please call 949-333-0418 or email seats@ocbluesfc.com for more information.
