Game Preview: Broncos Meet Raiders for Game Six of Regina Hub
March 22, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Swift Current Broncos News Release
Regina, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (0-5-0-0) ran into penalty trouble against the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday afternoon, and it cost them in a 5-1 loss. The Broncos hope to clean up the discipline and pick up their first win of the Subway WHL Hub when they take on the Prince Albert Raiders (2-1-1-1) Monday afternoon.
Saturday the Broncos came out strong in the opening few shifts, but quickly lost all that momentum as Josh Davies was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for kneeing 5:18 into the opening period. He was later handed a one-game suspension by the WHL, and will not be available to play against Prince Albert.
The Warriors scored twice on the major power play, taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Cohner Saleski got the Broncos on the board early in the second period, but the game stayed 2-1 only for a few minutes before the Warriors regained their two-goal lead shortly after a power-play opportunity expired.
Thing continued to unravel in the third period with Swift Current taking three minor penalties in a span of 23 seconds, allowing Warriors captain Daemon Hunt to score two five-on-tree power-play goals just 57 seconds apart. Final shots read 41-17 Moose Jaw.
The Broncos have had their fair share of injuries early on in the Regina Hub, and their opponent today has faced the same issue. Raider captain and Montreal Canadiens prospect Kaiden Guhle suffered an injury and was listed as being out "indefinitely" after their third game of the Hub against Moose Jaw.
Prince Albert has dropped back to back games heading into Monday's match up, though have lost just one of their five games in regulation. That came Friday in a 3-1 loss to the Saskatoon Blades. The Raiders were in action Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2 in overtime to Winnipeg.
While the Raiders have lost some of the firepower from their 2018-19 championship season, they still feature San Jose Sharks first-round draft pick Ozzy Weisblatt up front. A game-changer on his own, Weisblatt has recorded eight points in five games in the Hub.
Fresh off their championship and returning plenty of players during the 2019-20 season, the Raiders handled the Broncos with relative ease during the season series last year, winning all four games while outscoring the Broncos 17-3.
Pre-game show begins on Living Sky Casino Broncos Hockey on The Eagle 94.1 at 7:30.
