Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Regina, SK - The Prince Albert Raiders (2-2-1-1) fell 5-2 to the Swift Current Broncos (1-5-0-0) in the Subway Hub Centre at the Brandt Centre in Regina on Tuesday evening.
Ozzy Wiesblatt and Justin Nachbaur scored for the Raiders in the loss.
The Broncos opened the scoring 4:16 into the contest with a power-play marker. Owen Williams held the puck at the blueline then found Ralph Pelletier at the side of the goal. Pelletier took the backdoor feed and beat Max Paddock to put the Broncos up 1-0.
About seven minutes into the first, Wiesblatt tied it up with a fantastic individual effort. He collected the puck on the rush at the Broncos blueline, faked to the inside then cut around Devin Aubin. That put Wiesblatt in tight with Reid Dyck and the San Jose Sharks prospect put the puck over the goaltender's glove hand after a move to his forehand. It was Wiesblatt's second goal of the campaign.
Midway through the frame, the Broncos regained their lead. Bode Hagan backhanded the puck in front of the goal. Caleb Wyrostok got a stick on it to pop it into the air, then he knocked the deflection out of the air and into the net to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Early in the second, Aubin gave the Broncos a two-goal advantage. Mathew Ward found a trailing Devin Aubin and the defenceman snapped a shot that ricocheted off a player in front and bounced past Paddock, making it 3-1 2:23 into the middle frame.
The Raiders nearly got back within one on a power play midway through the period. Wiesblatt was set up with a great feed at the side of the goal, but put the puck over the empty side of the net.
Later in the period, Logan Danis set up Tyson Laventure with a breakaway feed. Laventure shoulder faked then shot with his forehand, but Dyck made the save with his glove.
Just before the end of the second, the Broncos extended their lead right as their power play expired. Cole Nagy centered the puck and it ricocheted off Carter Stebbing's skate and past Paddock to give the Broncos a 4-1 advantage after two periods.
The Raiders got a goal back early in the third period. Danis found Nachbaur with a cross-ice pass to the right wing at the Broncos blueline. The Cross Lake, MB product skated to the top of the right faceoff circle and wired a shot that beat Dyck on the far side for his first of the Subway WHL Hub, bringing the Raiders back within two 1:05 into the final frame.
However, the Raiders ran into penalty problems in the third period with four consecutive penalties in the frame. The Broncos were able to capitalize on one of them when Stebbings scored his second of the contest. He buried a cross-ice pass to put the Broncos up 5-2, which held up as the final.
Paddock finished the game with 23 saves in the loss. Dyck stopped 28 shots for his first career win in the WHL.
The Raiders are off until Thursday when they take on the Regina Pats (1-2-2-0). Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. Catch the game on WHL Live on CHL TV.
