Comeback Falls Short as Chiefs Fall to Winterhawks, 4-3

Spokane Chiefs News Release
Kent, Wash. - A pair of late third period goals weren't quite enough as the Spokane Chiefs closed out their three-game season-opening road trip with a 4-3 loss to the Portland Winterhawks on Sunday night.
Playing their third game in as many nights, Spokane struggled to generate much in the way of offense throughout the first two periods, but strong goaltending from Campbell Arnold kept Portland within striking distance.
The Winterhawks netted the contest's first three scores, following a first period marker from defenseman Nick Cecek with a shorthanded goal by Simon Knak at 12:12 in the second and a third period goal by Gabe Klassen that made it 3-0 1:07 into the final frame.
Minnesota Wild prospect Adam Beckman scored his third of the season to get the Chiefs on the board at 3:27, cutting into the Winterhawks' lead, but Reece Newkirk answered with Portland's second shorthanded goal of the night to extend the lead back to three.
The Chiefs rallied back as second-year blueliner Mac Gross found the net at 13:08 for his first career Western Hockey League goal at 13:08. Center Reed Jacobson notched his first marker of the young season at 14:37 to cut the Portland lead to just one, with rookie forward Copeland Fricker notching his first career point with a stretch pass through the neutral zone. Unfortunately, that's as close as Spokane would get as the Hawks held onto the 4-3 lead as the final horn sounded.
The Chiefs were outshot in the game, 33 to 38. Both teams went scoreless on the power play; Spokane in three chances and Portland in two.
