ABOUT LAST NIGHT: With Indianapolis' first run of the game already in on an RBI single by Hoy Park, Castro smacked his 12th home run of the season to the right-field berm to take a lead over the Bats (42-60) in a three-run fifth inning. The lead didn't last long, however, as a sacrifice fly tied the game in the top of the sixth. On the first pitch of his sixth-inning at-bat, Citta clocked a ball off Pedro Payano (L, 1-3) far out onto the concourse beyond left field to give Indianapolis a lead it would not relinquish. The designated hitter now has a hit in each of his three Triple-A games since returning to the Indians' lineup. Mike Jarvis then singled up the middle to plate an insurance run for Indy.
COUNT 'EM: The Indians pitching staff matched the offense's effort, striking out a season-high 15 batters in the win. It was their most strikeouts since recording 15 on June 1, 2021 vs. Columbus. All four of the team's 14-plus strikeout games this season have come at Victory Field. Osvaldo Bido was setting down opposing batters quickly, recording eight of his nine outs via punchout. John O'Reilly entered in relief and fanned a pair in 3.0 innings, and Hunter Stratton followed with four strikeouts in 2.0 hitless frames. Eric Hanhold struck out one.
VICTORIES AT VICTORY FIELD: The Indians recorded their 997th win (regular season and postseason combined) at Victory Field since the ballpark opened on July 11, 1996 last night, and are now just three wins away from 1,000 wins in the ballpark. They currently have a 985-807 record at the ballpark in the regular season and 12-12 record in postseason games.
CITTA THE HITTA: Brendt Citta launched a go-ahead solo home run in the sixth inning that Louisville would not come back from last night, leading the Indians to their fourth win in the past five games. In three games since returning to the Indians lineup for the first time since May 1, Citta is 4-for-11 with at least one hit and run scored in each. His first career Triple-A home run came on April 30 at Iowa, when he entered the game as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and hit a go-ahead solo homer to give Indianapolis a 4-3 win. He has at least one hit seven of his 10 total Triple-A games, with Wednesday's nightcap marking his first multi-hit performance (2-for-4) with the Indians.
RODOLFO ON A ROLL: Rodolfo Castro launched his 12th Triple-A home run of the season to give the Indians' their first lead of the game last night during a three-run fifth inning. The switch hitter is currently working an eight-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 11 of his last 12, with multiple hits in seven during that span. Since July 16, Castro is hitting .353 (18-for-51) with three doubles, a triple, three home runs, seven runs scored and eight driven in. The switch-hitter has been on a tear dating back to July 1, and in his past 23 games he has nine multi-hit games and a .301 average (28-for-93) and .894 OPS.
TODAY: The Indians can clinch the series victory with a win tonight against the Bats. The two teams have faced off nine times so far this season, with the Bats dominating the first rain-shortened series from 5/3-8, 4-1. The Indians lead the current seven-game set 3-1 going into the fifth game of the series. Tonight, Roansy Contreras will take the mound for his second start against Louisville this season. On 5/7, he tossed 4.0 scoreless innings and surrendered only one hit and two walks with six strikeouts in his lone start against the Bats. Countering for the Bats will be Brandon Williamson, making his first start against Indianapolis this season. The right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.27 ERA (8er/22.0ip) and a 1.68 WHIP.
ROANSY DAY: Roansy Contreras is set to make his ninth start with Indianapolis this season and third since being optioned by Pittsburgh prior to the All-Star break tonight vs. Louisville. The right-hander fanned five batters and yielded just one run on three hits in 3.0 innings pitched last Sunday at Toledo. Since returning to Indianapolis' starting rotation, he has surrendered two earned runs over 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts. He has yet to record a Triple-A win but is 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA (8er/25.1ip) and 31 strikeouts in seven starts with Indianapolis this season. In contrast, he is 3-2 with a 3.78 ERA (21er/50.0ip) and 50 strikeouts in 12 appearances (nine starts) with Pittsburgh.
NICK KNACK, MEARS IS BACK: Nick Mears is set to continue his second rehab assignment this season out of Indy's bullpen tonight after giving up one run on one hit in 1.0 inning on Tuesday. Earlier this season, he appeared with Indianapolis for six games on a rehab assignment before being shut down. During his six outings, he surrendered five earned runs in 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. In 17 Triple-A appearances in 2021, he went 2-2 with a 5.30 ERA (11er/18.2ip) and 25 strikeouts. With the Pirates, he owns a career 5.08 ERA (16er/28.1ip) and 30 strikeouts in 34 appearances.
THIS DAY IN 1996: Keith Mitchell launched a one-out, first-inning grand slam - the first in Victory Field history, albeit on the road - and Kirt Ojala tossed a two-hit complete game as the Indians defeated Nashville, 7-2. Mitchell's grand slam was his first home run of two on the day, and he ended the performance with a team-leading five RBI. The victory was the third time that Ojala went the distance during his 1996 campaign with Indianapolis, as well as being his seventh and final win of the season.
