From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Wyatt Mathisen hit a two-run single to spark a six-run eighth, and the Indians took game one of their four-game, road-home series against the Bats by a 7-1 final in Louisville. Eric Wood followed Mathisen's knock with a two-run double to make it 5-1, and Sean Rodriguez added a two-run two-bagger to cap the inning. The frame was Indy's largest since May 19 at Durham, when the Tribe hung six runs in the fourth of a 10-7 loss. Casey Sadler earned the win with 1.1 shutout innings in relief of Alex McRae who fell one out shy of his sixth quality start. McRae allowed one run on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 5.2 innings pitched. Rodriguez finished with two hits and two RBI in his first rehab appearance, and Kevin Kramer also logged a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN: J.T. Brubaker's Tribe tenure officially began on May 10 at Slugger Field, and he delivered six shutout frames in a 7-1 win over the Bats. Brubaker, 24, scattered six hits and one walk with two strikeouts and induced three of his eight double plays so far with Indy in that outing. Eleven days later, he bested the Bats at Victory Field, allowing a two-run homer to starting pitcher Brandon Finnegan in a 3-2 triumph. Those were the only two runs he surrendered across six innings of work. Of his three quality starts with the Tribe, two have come against Louisville. Brubaker is 2-1 with a 2.37 ERA (8 ER/30.1 IP) in six Triple-A road starts.

WORKING AHEAD: Brubaker's kryptonite in Triple-A has been issuing too many walks. The righty walked 20 batters thru his first 32 innings with Indy, a ratio of 5.6 BB/9.0 IP. Over his last four starts, he's walked just seven batters in 19.2 IP, equating to a 3.2 BB/9.0 IP ratio. In his six starts with Double-A Altoona to begin the season, he issued just eight walks in 35 innings (2.1 BB/9.0 IP).

SADLER UP: Casey Sadler earned the win in last night's game to improve to 4-3 on the season. He has shaved his ERA from 5.53 to 4.01 over the last five weeks (since May 22), allowing just six earned runs in 26.2 innings pitched. During that stretch, he's gone 2-1 and walked just 2.4 batters per 9.0 innings (7 BB/26.2 IP); he walked 5.0 batters per 9.0 innings (14 BB/25 IP) across his first eight appearances of 2018.

IN A PINCH: Wyatt Mathisen delivered a tiebreaking two-run single in the top of the eighth last night, making him 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as a pinch-hitter this season. As a team, Indy batters are just 5-for-30 (.167) with four RBI in those situations, meaning Mathisen has accounted for 40% of Indy's pinch-hit base hits and 100% of the RBI.

FEELING BETTER VS. THE BATS: The Indians snapped a four-game slide with their win last night, improving to 6-3 in nine games against Louisville this year. The two teams play another 11 games against one another. The Tribe finished 15-8 against the Bats in 2017, including a 7-4 record at Slugger Field. After posting a remarkable 18-4 record against Louisville in 2012, the Tribe lost the season series four straight years (2013-16), going 42-53 during that stretch. The Indians haven't won the head-to-head series against the Bats in consecutive seasons since 1998-2000; they went 11-5, 9-7 and 13-3 in those successive campaigns.

THE FINER DETAILS: The Indians are batting .264 as a team with 37 runs scored in nine games (4.1 RPG) against Louisville this season. Jordan Luplow (.393, 11-for-28, 6 XBH, 6 RBI), Wyatt Mathisen (.467, 7-for-15, 1 HR, 5 RBI) and Pablo Reyes (.370, 10-for-27, 1 HR, 4 RBI) have had the most success at the plate. Indy's pitching staff has surrendered just 26 runs (2.9 RPG), posting a 2.39 ERA (21 ER/79.0 IP) along the way. They have fanned 66 batters, walked 26 and yielded 75 hits (five home runs).

STAY IN THE LUPLOW: Jordan Luplow has hit safely in 23 of his last 27 overall. He is batting .413 (26-for-63) with three homers, five doubles, 14 RBI, 12 runs scored and 12 walks against just nine strikeouts over his last 18 games. Since May 1, he has hit .322 (67-for-208) with 31 extra-base hits, 39 RBI and 30 runs scored in 57 games. All eight of his home runs with Indy have come on the road.

KRAMER KOOL-AID: Kevin Kramer is batting .406 (13-for-32) with one triple, four doubles, four RBI, and seven runs scored over his last nine games. His .286 average through a team-high 75 games is the highest it's been since May 15 when it was at .290. Kramer recorded an extra-base hit in 14 of 26 games and had a team-high 12 multi-hit performances in June, leading him to a .330 average (31-for-94) and 1.056 OPS. He ranks among league leaders in XBH (3rd, 34), total bases (3rd, 139), home runs (T-3rd, 11), runs scored (4th, 45), slugging percentage (5th, .496) and doubles (T-5th, 20). Kramer is second on the team with 25 walks.
