SWB RailRiders Nine to Know

July 3, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Leading Off: The RailRiders enter play tonight with a 41-40 record and are in second place in the International League North Division, five and a half games behind Lehigh Valley. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre plays in Buffalo this evening at 6:05 p.m. before returning home for two games on July 4 and 5 against the Bisons. After this home-and-home set, the RailRiders are on the road at Pawtucket for three games leading into the Triple-A All-Star break.

Two Stars: Last week, the International League announced its 2018 All-Stars, which will compete against the PCL All-Stars on July 11 at Columbus's Huntington Park. RailRiders pitcher Cody Carroll and infielder Brandon Drury have been picked as reserves for the International League's squad. Carroll is eligible to participate, but Drury is back on the New York Yankees active 25-man roster and will not be in attendance.

Who's Next? Multiple outlets have reported that Masahiro Tanaka will make a rehabilitation appearance for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, July 4, at PNC Field. The game between the RailRiders and Buffalo Bisons will start at 7:05 p.m. and will be followed by fireworks after the final out. Tanaka is slated to make the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. The 29-year-old pitcher was placed on the New York Yankees 10-Day Disabled List on June 9 with two mild hamstring strains.

Power Up: As of July 2, the RailRiders lead all International League clubs with 83 home runs.

Name/Game Changer: In June, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre changed its moniker twice to raise funds for charity. The RailRiders became the Melonheads on June 9 and auctioned jerseys to raise funds and awareness for the Boys and Girls Club of NEPA. On June 30, the team became the TeddyBears to raise funding for the SWB Pinstripes Foundation. In addition, a jersey auction was held on June 29 to benefit the Alzheimer's Association.

Second to None: While multiple Minor League teams are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the film "The Sandlot," none have added the clout that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is offering. Patrick Renna, the actor who played Hamilton "Ham" Porter, will make an appearance and sign autographs. The RailRiders are giving away a bobblehead in Ham's likeness, presented by Dickson City Hyundai. The RailRiders have also added Wilkes-Barre native David Mickey Evans to the event on July 28. Evans co-wrote and directed the beloved 1993 film.

New Guy: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders have hired Andrew Yarnall as their new Vice President of Ticket Sales. Yarnall, 28, has spent the last two seasons as the Director of Ticket Sales and Service for the Salem Red Sox, an Advanced-A club in the Carolina League. During his time with Salem, he and the staff set franchise records in ticket sales revenues in back-to-back seasons.

Safety First: The RailRiders have announced upgrades in stadium security at PNC Field. The major component of the upgrade will be metal detection wands at all entrances as fans enter the ballpark. The upgrades are another step in a multi-year commitment the RailRiders are making to improve safety measures at PNC Field. The extended protective netting down the first and third base sides of the concourse was installed prior to last season and more improvements are being eyed for 2019 and beyond.

Potent Notables: The 2018 Legend's Series continues on July 13 with an appearance by 1996 World Series MVP John Wetteland and the first 2,500 fans will receive the Shane Victorino bobblehead.
