Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With a consistent display of solid pitching, fielding and hitting, the Louisville Bats (33-47) used a full team game to take down the Indianapolis Indians (44-38) 3-1 at Louisville Slugger Field on Tuesday night. The Bats split the front end of the four-game split series.
In his fourth rehab start of the season with Louisville, Homer Bailey (1-2, 6.35) delivered his second consecutive quality start and earned his first win of the season, his first career win against the Indians. He performed solidly for 6.2 innings, allowing one earned run from seven hits while striking out eight on 103 pitches (69 strikes). Tonight marks Bailey's third game this season without walking a batter.
Indianapolis starter, J.T. Brubaker (4-3, 3.77) was unable to combat the Louisville offense and took the loss. He went 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs (one home run) from six hits while walking one and striking out three.
The Louisville offense took their first bite in the opening at-bat of the second inning as Gabriel Guerrero connected for his fifth home run of the season, striking the ball deep into center field.
From there, the runs continued. With D.J. Peterson doubling to right field, followed by a single from Steve Selsky to push him to third, Stuart Turner came up to the plate to hit a sacrifice fly to score Peterson. Also wanting to join in the action, Mason Williams then stepped up to the plate to single and score Selsky to make it 3-0 Louisville.
The Indians struggled to get going offensively. In the third inning, a deep single to right field scored Pablo Reyes but the Bats would allow nothing more. With Kevin Newman at second, Stuart Turner delivered a stellar pickoff to end the frame.
In hopes of a late comeback in the eighth, Indianapolis recorded a double followed by back-to-back singles to close the margin to 3-2 but ultimately, it was not enough to steal the game.
Gabriel Guerrero was a star for Louisville. For the second night in a row he recorded a triple and his home run ignited the offensive momentum to seal the win in game two.
Louisville will head to Indianapolis for the second half of the series against the Indians. Left-hander Cody Reed (2-6, 4.57) will start for game three facing fellow southpaw Brandon Waddell (2-4, 7.84). First pitch is set for 6:15 p.m. at Victory Field.
