Pigs Walk off against Chiefs

July 3, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

The IronPigs needed extra innings for the second time in their last five games, and the Pigs needed the long ball from Colin Cowgill in the tenth to walk-off the Chiefs, 4-2. It was Cowgill's eighth home run of the season, and the fourth walkoff of the season for Lehigh Valley.

The Pigs offense was held without a hit in the first 4 2/3 against starter Tommy Milone. After Milone struck out the first two batters of the inning, Matt McBride picked up the Pigs first hit of the ball game. One batter later Danny Ortiz singled up the middle to tie the game up at one.

Tom Eshelman continued to pitch well for the Pigs allowing just one run in seven innings of work. Eshelman struck out seven and retired the final seven batters that he faced in the ball game before being lifted in the eighth with the game tied. Eshelman has allowed one run or less in three of his last four starts and has a 2.66 ERA in those appearances.

The Chiefs best chance to score came in the top of the eighth when they loaded the bases with no outs against Hector Neris. After issuing a pair of singles and a walk, Neris struck out the next three batters to escape the inning without allowing a run and keeping the score tied.

Neither side could manage a run to force extras, and the Chiefs immediately gifted a run on a wild pitch by Pedro Beato.

The Pigs will move on to Syracuse for the continuation of this home-and-home series with the Chiefs. Jacob Waguespack will make a start for Lehigh Valley following a promotion from Double-A Reading. First pitch will come from NBT Bank Stadium at 7:05 p.m.

While the Pigs return to Coca-Cola Park over the weekend for a series against the Rochester Red Wings, fans can still purchase tickets for the Fourth on the Field night at Coca-Cola Park tomorrow.

The 2018 Season is the IronPigs' 11th season at Coca-Cola Park and 11th as the top affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.
