ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A pair of five-run frames by the Nashville offense handed Indianapolis a series-levelling loss last night, 13-4. With both teams scoreless after three innings, Travis Swaggerty laid down a bunt single to leadoff the fourth and was immediately brought home with Yoshi Tsutsugo's first homer in seven games of his rehab assignment. The lead was then stretched to three runs with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Taylor Davis in the fifth inning. Nashville countered in the bottom half of the fifth, plating five runs on six hits (four for extra bases) to take a two-run lead. Free bases and pitching miscues led to five additional runs in the seventh, and a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth tacked on more insurance runs. Major leaguer Kevin Newman then plated the final Indianapolis run in the ninth with an RBI single following consecutive two-out walks.
TSUTSUGO SURGING: Yoshi Tsutsugo launched a two-run homer last night for the first home run of his rehab assignment. The first baseman/outfielder has been on fire during his time with Indianapolis, hitting .412 (7-for-17) with more walks (8) than strikeouts (2), a .577 on-base percentage and 1.224 OPS.
HITTING THEIR STRIDES: Cal Mitchell and Kevin Newman each are working nine-game hitting streaks with the Indians, which are tied for the team's longest this season (also: Ji-Hwan Bae, 5/19-29; Bligh Madris, 6/1-11). More on their individual streaks are listed below:
Newman, 5/19 (1)-7/1: With a season-high three hits last night at Nashville, Newman has now hit safely in nine consecutive games and nine-of-10 games with the Indians this season across both of his rehab assignments. Since the second game of his first rehab stint on 5/19 (1), he owns a .375 average (12-for-32), 10 hits of which have been singles.
Mitchell, 5/17-7/1: After spending the last month in the big leagues, Mitchell returned to the Indians lineup and picked up where he left off to extend his Triple-A hitting streak to nine games. Since the beginning of his streak on 5/17, he is hitting .382 (13-for-34) with a .842 OPS. In 36 games with Indianapolis this season, Mitchell has hit .316 (43-for-136) with a .500 slugging percentage and .867 OPS.
SWAGGERTY STREAKING: With a single last night, Travis Swaggerty extended his on-base streak to 20 games, the third-longest active on-base streak in the International League. Since his streak began on 5/27, Swaggerty has hit safely in 17 of 20 games with a .316 average (25-for-79), 10 extra-base hits and 18 RBI. His hot streak extends even farther back than that, and he has reached base safely in 28 of his last 29 games with hits in 24 since 5/17. In that time, he owns a .336 average (38-for-113), 13 extra-base hits (five doubles, three triples, five home runs) and 24 RBI.
TONIGHT: The Indians will look to clinch at least a series tie in their lone set vs. Nashville this season tonight in an 8:05 PM ET first pitch at First Horizon Park. Last year, they split the season series, 5-5, with an even record in six games in Nashville and four in Indy. Coming off a stellar outing with Pittsburgh (more below), Miguel Yajure will take the mound for Indianapolis in his first career outing against the Sounds. Countering for the home team is seasoned Triple-A hurler Marcus Walden, who owns a 1-0 record, 0.00 ERA (3er/13.1ip), three walks and 12 strikeouts in five outings (one start) since 2016. In his lone start vs. Indy on 7/28/17 (1) with Pawtucket, he tossed a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
HALFWAY HOME: The 37-37 Indians play their 75th game of the 2022 season tonight, the finale to the first half of the 150-game regular season. With the 2021 season beginning in May instead of April, the true halfway point of the 130-game regular season came on 7/20 when the Indians beat Toledo on a walk-off single in 10 innings to improve to 33-32. The Indians played only 128 games during that campaign due to a pair of cancellations and finished with a sub-.500 record of 61-67. The last time the Indians had a sub-.500 record halfway through their game schedule was in 2011 when they were 35-37 halfway through the 144-game slate.
YA-HOO IS HERE: Miguel Yajure is set to make his return to the Indians starting rotation tonight after a stellar spot start with Pittsburgh on Monday. Facing the Nationals on the road, the right-hander surrendered four hits sprinkled throughout 4.0 shutout innings as the Pirates took an early 2-0 lead. He fired 41 of his 65 pitches for strikes but did not record a strikeout, instead handing out three free passes to opposing batters. It was his longest outing this season and his first scoreless outing since fanning five over 2.0 one-hit innings for Indy on 5/8 vs. Louisville.
THIS DATE IN 1997: Pedro Martinez tossed the first of four 9.0-inning complete games in 1997 for the Indians in a 9-0 shutout at Nashville. He improved to 2-1 on the season after giving up six hits and two walks while striking out two. The Indians offense backed him with one run in the fourth and sixth innings before erupting with seven runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Brian Hunter and Ozzie Timmons both smacked three-run homers in the seventh to lead the team with three RBI apiece, while Pat Watkins and Eric Owens were the only Indy players with multi-hit games.
