LAST TIME OUT
MOOSIC, PA (July 1, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders defeated the Buffalo Bisons 8-1 on Friday evening for their fifth consecutive victory. Matt Krook pitched 7.2 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and took a perfect game into the eighth inning.
The RailRiders grabbed an early lead with two runs in the first. Estevan Florial led off the frame with a double and was brought home when Miguel Andújar reached on an error. Andújar was credited with an RBI and now has seven this series. Two batters later, Phillip Evans drove Andújar in with a run-scoring single to left to make it 2-0. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre plated two more runs in the second after solo home runs from Chris Owings and Armando Alvarez. It was the first big fly for Owings as a member of the RailRiders, while Alvarez has now homered in four straight starts. SWB added another tally in the fifth via Evans' second RBI knock of the game. Evans went 2-for-4 tonight with the two runs batted in.
The RailRiders extended their lead to 6-0 with another run in the fourth. Florial smacked his third double of the game to right and was brought in on a Tim Locastro RBI single. Locastro finished the night 2-for-4 and is now 4-for-12 this series. SWB added two more runs for good measure on a José Peraza two-run blast to left in the seventh. It was the fifth round-tripper of the campaign for Peraza.
Greene allowed one run over the final inning and a third in the 8-1 final. Krook (4-6) earned his fourth win of the season. Graham Spraker (1-3) suffered the loss for Buffalo. The RailRiders have now won seven of their last eight games.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome in the Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, for the first time this season. The RailRiders played their only series in Buffalo, NY in late April with the Bisons taking four-of-six games.
KROOKING WITH GAS - Last night, Matt Krook took a perfect game into the eighth inning, retiring the first 23 batters he faced. It pushed a streak he had into the game to 42 straight batters retired dating back two previous outings. Buffalo's Chavez Young broke up the bid with a single tapped in front of the plate. Krook exited after issuing a walk after striking out a season-high ten batters on 93 pitches. Krook also now has an active 21.2 scoreless innings streak. There has never been a perfect game in franchise history.
HAY HAY HAY HAY- Hayden Wesneski takes the hill looking for a bounce-back outing. After surrendering just 11 ER over 44.1 IP across nine starts (2.23 ERA), the righty has allowed 18 ER in 20.2 IP across five starts (7.84 ERA). He saw Buffalo on April 20 (4.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, L).
SWIPER YES SWIPING - Estevan Florial has stolen 26 bases this season, which leads the International League. Twenty-six stolen bases is a single-season career-high for him. Florial is currently on pace to steal 50 bases this season which would set a franchise record, besting Tommy Barrett's 44 stolen bags in 1989 (inaugural season).
4G INVERTED DIVE WITH A MiG-27TH - Miguel Andújar was lifted mid-game on Friday night after going 1-for-3 with an RBI. He was called today as the Yankees' "27th Man" in their doubleheader in Cleveland. He tallied a hit in 16 of 21 games played in the month of June. In this series with Buffalo, he leaves having gone 7-for-15 with a homer, double and seven RBI.
DOWN WITH O.D.P., YA YOU KNOW ME - Oswald Peraza lost his eleven-game hitting streak Thursday night (20-44, .455). It matched a career-best which lasted from August 9 to August 21, 2019 while with the Charleston River Dogs (16-for-44, .364). He has a thirteen-game on-base streak.
GIVE IT TO GREG - Greg Weissert leads the team with seven saves in eight opportunities. Seven saves are the most he's tallied in a single season of his career. He has been asked to gather four outs in three of those saves including in the Tuesday opener this week against the Bisons. Weissert's only blown save this year came on June 8 on the road against the Syracuse Mets.
ARM-AND-O LEG - Armando Alvarez enters Saturday on a six-game hitting streak, the longest he's had this season. During this stretch, he is 10-for-20 with four homers and two doubles. With nine homers in 104 at-bats, he is hitting a home run in every 11.55 at-bats, the highest rate he's had in any one season in his career. Entering the season, he was homering once in every 44.33 at-bats (39-of-1,729).
VIVA PE-RAZA - José Peraza is currently on a seven-game hitting streak, during which he is 9-for-25 (.360) with two home runs and a double. In his first 46 games of the season, Peraza went 23-for-114 (.202) with seven extra-base hits. Since then in his last 20 games, he has gone 24-for-72 (.333) with nine extra-base hits.
STREAKY - Greg Bird is on a nine-game on-base streak... Greg Weissert has made seven-straight scoreless outings... Shane Greene has made three-straight scoreless outings...
JUNE, NOT GLOOM - The RailRiders finished the month of June with a 15-12 record, their first winning record in a lone month this season. They had won nine games in both April and May. June also saw the team's highest batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, total home runs and their lowest ERA of any one month.
ON DECK - Sunday is Sunday Family Funday, presented by Geisinger and Q92. Kids can play catch on the field from noon until 12:20 PM, get $2 Dippin Dots and Mamita's Ices all game long and can run the bases after the final out.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - After a rainout on Friday, the New York Yankees (56-21) play a doubleheader today with the Cleveland Guardians... The Somerset Patriots (45-28) dropped Fridays game to the Reading Fightin Phils 7-5. A Jesus Bastidas three-run double gave the Patriots a 4-1 advantage, a lead they would give up in the loss. Luis Medina starts tonight at 6:45 PM... The Hudson Valley Renegades (36-37) lost 6-2 to the Brooklyn Cyclones. Tyler Hardman was 1-for-4 with both RBIs. Yoendrys Gómez starts tonight at 6:05 PM... The Tampa Tarpons (32-41) lost 5-3 to the Bradenton Marauders. Antonio Gomez led the offense with a pair of RBIs. They match up tonight at 6:05 PM...
