From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: In their first matchup following a 2017 Governors' Cup Semifinal meeting against one another, the Bulls maintained their grasp on the Tribe with a 12-3 rout last night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Jake Bauers clubbed a run-scoring, ground-rule double in the fourth to break a 3-3 tie, beginning a string of nine unanswered runs for the home team. Two sac flies later in that frame made it 6-3, and the Bulls buried Indy with a six-run seventh before the game was washed away by rain in the top of the eighth. Indianapolis native Micah Johnson gave the Bulls the early lead with an RBI triple in the second, but the Tribe battled back to knot the game at three with three tallies of their own in the third. Kevin Newman scored Wyatt Mathisen with a single to left, just moments before Christopher Bostick roped a two-run double to plate both Pablo Reyes and Newman. Joe Musgrove was tagged for six earned runs on 10 hits in five innings pitched in the loss.
KAN'T KOOL KEVIN: Kevin Newman extended his season-high hit streak to nine games with a 3-for-4 performance last night. The reigning IL Player of the Week hasn't cooled off this week, a four-game stretch in which he's hit .471 (8-for-17) with two RBI and two runs scored. The middle infielder has now accumulated 21 knocks since May 9, the most in all of professional baseball. Newman has notched a hit in 15 of 16 games in the month of May and raised his batting average nearly 100 points (.234 on April 30, .329 after May 18). This month he's batting .444 (28-for-63). He ranks among IL leaders in hits (2nd, 46), runs scored (T-2nd, 24), batting (4th, .329) and doubles (T-7th, 11).
BOSTICK BASHING: Tribe outfielder Christopher Bostick went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in last night's loss, elevating his average to .317 (39-for-123) for the season -- fifth in the International League. He has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, including multi-hit performances in four of the last five. In his previous 10 contests, the 25-year-old owns a .326 average (14-for-43) with one homer, three doubles, eight RBI and seven runs scored.
WE'LL DO THE MATH-ISEN: Tribe infielder Wyatt Mathisen has impressed at both Double- and Triple-A this season, batting a combined .429 (18-for-42) with two home runs, one triple, five doubles, nine RBI, 14 walks and a 1.328 OPS between Altoona and Indy. In six games with the Tribe -- all on the road -- Mathisen is batting an even .500 (8-for-16) with one home run, two doubles and six RBI. He has clubbed right-handed pitchers this season; with Altoona he hit .421 (8-for-19) with one triple, three doubles, two RBI and eight walks against righties. In Indy he's batted an absurd .857 (6-for-7) with two doubles, four RBI and two walks against right-handers. He is 4-for-16 with both of his home runs this season coming against southpaws.
TRIBE AT THE TOP: The Indians lead the IL in average (.279), doubles (102), triples (13) and OBP (.337) and are second in slugging percentage (.426). The Tribe also rank second in fewest strikeouts (271) and fourth in both runs scored (170 - 4.47 runs per game) and stolen bases (30).
MEADOWS' DEBUT: Austin Meadows impressed in his major league debut last night for Pittsburgh, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and a stolen base. He batted seventh and started in center field in the Pirates' eventual 3-2 loss to the Padres at PNC Park. His first knock came in the fourth inning off San Diego right-hander Tyson Ross, a sharp grounder into right-center field. Meadows, 23, then promptly stole second base; he led the Tribe with eight steals before the promotion. In his third trip to the plate against Ross, he drove a single through the right side. His final AB came against Craig Stammen in the bottom of the eighth, a deep flyout to center.
TYLER'S TURN: Tyler Eppler returns to the Tribe rotation for the second game of the series in Durham tonight. The right-hander has allowed just one run this month in 11.0 innings pitched, making three appearance (one start) for Indy. The 25-year-old has baffled left-handed batters this season, holding them to a .192 average (10-for-52), three extra-base hits and a .507 OPS. Last year, left-handed hitters clobbered Eppler to the tune of a .341 average (75-for-220), 29 extra-base hits and a .974 OPS.
BULLPEN BRILLIANCE: Johnny Hellweg, Tanner Anderson and Dovydas Neverauskas have dominated IL opposition since April 7. The trio has combined for nine saves and a 0.38 ERA (2 ER/48.0 IP) since that date. They've yielded just 32 hits and 15 walks with 41 strikeouts, posting a 0.98 WHIP along the way.
