Pigs Shut out Chiefs
May 19, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Six scoreless innings by Cole Irvin (4-1) and three RBI by Joey Meneses lifted the Lehigh Valley IronPigs to a 5-0 victory Saturday afternoon against the Syracuse Chiefs. Meneses finished a single shy of the cycle and is now batting an IL-leading .372 on the year.
The Chiefs sent former MLB All-Star Edwin Jackson (2-2) to the mound and the Pigs got to him from the get-go. After a one-out double by Collin Cowgill, Joey Meneses extended his hitting streak to six games with a triple to put the Pigs up 1-0 in the first inning.
On the other side, Irvin has gone at least six innings in his last six outings and has won his last three starts to tie for the team lead with four wins this season. Striking out six and scattering six hits, Irvin has not allowed a run in his last two starts.
Meneses drove in three of the five runs in the ballgame and continued to power the offense. With his solo home run in the sixth, Meneses has now homered in four straight games and has drove in six runs during that span.
The Pigs bullpen backed up the strong outing by Irvin with three scoreless innings. After Irvin allowed a pair of singles to open the seventh, Zac Curtis inherited the baserunners with no outs. Curtis fanned the first two batters he faced and got a pop-out to end the frame and preserve the shutout for Irvin.
Jake Thompson (1) recorded his first save of the season, tossing an inning and a third and striking out three. This was the first save of Thompson's minor league career. His first professional career save came earlier this season when he tossed three innings to close out a win for the Phillies.
Lehigh Valley wraps up the road trip and goes for the sweep of the Chiefs tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 p.m. in Syracuse. Drew Anderson goes for his first win of the season against Austin Voth.
The Pigs return home Monday night for a four-game series against IL North opponent Rochester. That series includes the Pigs' Hispanic Heritage Celebration (May 23-24).
