Pedroia Mans Second in 2-1 Loss to Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Back at his customary perch at second base, Dustin Pedroia flashed the leather defensively in his six innings of work, though the Pawtucket Red Sox fell to the Rochester Red Wings, 2-1, on Saturday night at Frontier Field.

In the third game of his rehab assignment, Pedroia batted third in the Pawtucket order and played second base for the second time - this time for six innings. The four-time American League All-Star made a trio of crisp defensive plays - turning a 6-4-3 double play with a runner bearing down on him in the third and snaring a pair of fifth-inning ground balls - and went 0-for-3 with a groundout to first, a lineout to center and a flyout to right.

The Red Wings (20-16) used two runs in the fourth inning to secure a series win over the PawSox (17-21) ahead of tomorrow's third and final game. The PawSox have now dropped nine of their last 11 games and have been limited to five total runs over their last three games. Pawtucket, which has only allowed four runs in the first two games of the series, placed the tying run aboard with nobody out in the ninth.

For the first time on his rehab assignment, Red Sox reliever Tyler Thornburg pitched on consecutive days following his scoreless inning in Friday's series opener. Thornburg took over for the seventh inning, issued a leadoff walk on five pitches, induced a pop-out just behind the second-base bag and issued a second walk - this time on four pitches - to conclude his 11-pitch evening. Pawtucket southpaw Robby Scott, however, followed and recorded a pair of huge strikeouts to escape the jam and pick up Thornburg, keeping the PawSox within a run.

Pitching against the organization for whom he made his MLB debut last season, Pawtucket starter Justin Haley (L, 1-5) fanned six over six innings of two-run ball in which he only walked one and ceded five hits. In addition to Scott's stingy work out of the bullpen, Pawtucket righty Brandon Workman added a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.

Rochester starter Myles Jaye (W, 3-2) dazzled over seven innings of one-hit work, fanning two, walking one and giving up just one run. Jaye retired first 14 PawSox batters he faced until Pawtucket third baseman Mike Olt took him deep with two outs in the fifth. Red Wings right-hander Nick Anderson (S, 2) issued a leadoff walk in the ninth but proceeded to strike out the side.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Rochester cracked open a 2-0 lead when second baseman Taylor Featherston delivered a two-out, two-run triple.

Pawtucket sliced the deficit in half when Olt drilled a solo homer to left field in the top of the fifth inning.

With just one hit through seven innings, the PawSox stirred in the eighth by pounding out consecutive one-out singles. Rochester reliever Gabriel Moya, though, stranded the pair to keep the 2-1 lead intact.

The PawSox conclude the weekend series in Rochester on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Pawtucket right-hander Marcus Walden (0-1, 7.50) is scheduled to start opposite Red Wings righty Aaron Slegers (4-1, 2.28). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 12:35 p.m.

The PawSox will finally return home to McCoy Stadium for an extended homestand May 21-28 (Monday-Monday).
