Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - Jeremy Hazelbaker stepped to the plate with the Bulls down by two runs in the fifth and drilled a three-run homer, giving the Durham Bulls the lead in an eventual 10-7 comeback win over the Indianapolis Indians at the DBAP on Saturday night.
Fireworks did not just light up the sky Saturday night, they also lit up the scoreboard with Justin Williams hitting his fourth homer of the year in the second, and Hazelbaker putting the home team in front for good with a three-run shot in the fifth.
After the Bulls fell behind 1-0 on an RBI single by Jacob Stallings in the first inning, they responded with four runs in the second. Opening with a solo-shot by Williams, the home side plated another run on Adam Moore's single, and two more on an RBI double off the bat of Kean Wong for a 4-1 advantage.
In the sixth, the Indians brought across six runs on six hits including a two-RBI single by Christopher Bostick, solo home runs by Jordan Luplow and Eric Wood, and an RBI double by Wyatt Mathisen, moving the visitors in front, 7-4.
Durham mounted a comeback in the fifth, opening with a leadoff double from Jake Bauers and a hit-by-pitch of Jason Coats, setting the table for Williams who lined a single to right scoring Bauers and cutting the deficit to 7-5.
Later in the frame, Hazelbaker stepped to the plate with runners on first and second and one out on the board, worked into a 1-2 count and launched his fourth homer of the year propelling Bull City in front.
The Bulls extended their lead to 9-7 with a run in the seventh on an infield single by Moore, scoring Williams after he doubled earlier in the frame. The scoring was not done for the home team as Williams lifted his second double off the Blue Monster scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth, extending the lead to 10-7.
Colin Poche (W, 2-0) earned his second win of the season out of the bullpen completing 2.1 hitless innings with four strikeouts. He has struck out 13 batters over 8.1 innings.
Williams went 4-for-5, with a homer, two doubles and three RBI, marking his first three-hit game of the season, falling a triple short of the cycle.
Moore finished 3-for-4 as well, with two RBI. He has a hit in his last five games and an RBI in four-of-five. Durham stretched its winning streak to five games, which is the longest of the season. Ian Gibaut (S, 3) tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, with one strikeout earning his third save of the year.
The Bulls (26-14) and the Indians (20-19) match up for the finale of a three-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Sunday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Chih-Wei Hu (0-2, 3.79) is scheduled to start for the home team against Alex McRae (0-4, 5.94) for the visitors.
