Game Day Preview: KGN vs HAM
December 10, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Kingston Frontenacs (14-5-3-0) face-off against Hamilton (14-6-2-2) for a second time tonight at Leon's Centre, with the Bulldogs making their first visit of the 2020-21 season to the Limestone City. The game marks an early battle for the East Division lead, with the visitors holding a one-point lead on the Frontenacs entering action tonight.
The Frontenacs have not lost since a 5-2 defeat to North Bay on November 26, entering tonight on a five-game unbeaten streak that started with a 5-4 SO win over tonight's opposition in Hamilton on November 27. Francesco Arcuri (3A), Shane Wright (2G,1A), and Lucas Edmonds (2G,1A) all had three-point games.
Wright had given the Frontenacs the lead midway through the third period, but a late goal with under five minutes left by Mark Duarte sent the teams to bonus time. After nothing was settled three-on-three, the teams played out an extended 14-player shootout, with rookie Chris Thibodeau finally scoring the game-winner as Kingston's seventh shooter. Current OHL Goaltender of the Week, Leevi Meriläinen stopped all seven shooters he faced extending a perfect shootout save record to 13-for-13, helping earn the extra point. The 12 wins by Meriläinen are third-most in the OHL. Avery Hayes had a pair of goals for the Bulldogs in the loss.
The Black and Gold scored a season-high three powerplay goals on eight chances while not allowing a goal against on only two penalties taken and that was the key in last games' 5-4 win. Hamilton takes 12.2 penalty minutes per game to Kingston's 10.7, so special teams' chances will be critical.
The Defence Never Rests
Jake Murray has a five-game point streak (1G,8A) being named to the CHL Team of the Week on Wednesday (joining teammate Leevi Meriläinen). The veteran rearguard is tied for 11th in blueline points and leads Kingston in plus/minus (+14), placing him 4th-best in the OHL amongst rearguards.
The Dogs
Hamilton has won two in a row, and like Kingston, has lost only twice in regulation over their past 10 games. On Wednesday night, a 4-0 shutout win over the Petes has the team playing stingy defence, allowing just two goals over the last two games. Logan Morrison (31) leads the Hamilton offence, with Jan Mysak and George Diaco providing substantial depth (30). Montreal Canadiens prospect Mysak (16) leads in goals. Nathan Staios leads all OHL blueliners in assists (20) and scoring with 26 points, and Marco Costantini has been solid in the Bulldog pipes with the 6th best goals-against-average in the OHL (2.86) with two shutouts.
