North Bay Battalion News Release

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Brandon Coe scored at 1:10 of overtime and added an assist as the North Bay Battalion rallied to defeat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 5-4 in an Ontario Hockey League game Thursday night.

Matvey Petrov contributed one goal and three assists, Mitchell Russell had one goal and two assists and Josh Currie and Liam Arnsby also scored for North Bay, which improved its won-lost-extended record to 16-7-2 for 34 points, first in the Central Division and Eastern Conference.

Goaltender Joe Vrbetic faced 30 shots before a Memorial Gardens crowd of 1,955 as the Battalion posted a third straight win in its first home game since Nov. 21.

With Kyle Jackson sidelined since an injury last Friday night in a 5-2 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs, Russell again skated on the top line with Petrov and Coe.

Tanner Dickinson, Robert Calisti, Tye Kartye and Bryce McConnell-Barker scored for Sault Ste. Marie, 14-9-1 for 29 points atop the West Division. Goaltender Tucker Tynan faced 34 shots in his Greyhounds debut after a trade Monday from the Niagara IceDogs.

The Greyhounds led 3-2 through 40 minutes, but Arnsby tied it on the power play at 7:41 of the third period when he redirected a Petrov feed high over Tynan's glove from the lip of the crease. Russell also assisted on Arnsby's seventh goal of the season.

McConnell-Barker struck off an odd-man rush on the power play at 11:06, slipping past Simon Rose and beating Vrbetic to the stick side from the left-wing circle.

The Troops had two good power-play chances in the 14th minute but couldn't find the equalizer until Petrov took a pass from Coe and waited for Tynan to commit before sliding the puck around him at 16:18. Russell also assisted on Petrov's team-leading 17th goal.

Coe, who leads the OHL scoring race with 48 points, made the only shot of overtime count, beating Tynan low to the stick side from the right circle. Avery Winslow, with his second assist, and Petrov set up Coe's 15th goal.

The teams traded first-period power-play goals, with Russell opening the scoring at 7:28. He took a Petrov pass deep on the left side and banked the puck off Tynan's stick with a pass across the goalmouth that appeared intended for Coe at the right post. Ty Nelson also assisted on Russell's 14th goal, which sailed up and over Tynan's shoulder.

Dickinson replied during a two-man advantage when he ripped the puck past Vrbetic's blocker from the left circle at 17:29.

Currie converted with the man advantage at 3:18 of the second period when he took a cross-ice pass from Rose and put home a wrister from the right circle. Winslow earned the second assist on the ninth goal by Currie, who returned from a two-game suspension.

Defenceman Calisti tied it 2-2 with his 10th goal at 8:06 when he lobbed the puck from the left point through traffic.

The visitors, who outshot the Troops 9-7 in the period, took their first lead with the teams skating four-on-four at 14:54 when Kartye's long drive beat Vrbetic, who was screened by Michael Podolioukh. Kartye leads the league with 21 goals.

The Battalion opens a home-and-home series with the Barrie Colts on the road at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The game can be seen live in North Bay on YourTV Channels 12 and 700. The return engagement is at 2 p.m. Sunday on Indigenous Youth Day.
