Catching Up
It's been two months to the day since the Winterhawks and Chiefs last met in a 3-0 Portland win at the VMC, and both teams look vastly different these days. For Portland, Jaydon Dureau still had not rejoined the roster at that time (more on him later), and the team was still finding its footing in the midst of a tough run of games. Now, with points in seven of their last eight games (including three straight) and some high-octane star power beginning to heat up, the Hawks are a much more confident and dangerous team, especially after last Sunday's dismantling of division-leading Everett.
On Spokane's side, several key names have been sent elsewhere in the WHL in exchange for a haul of draft picks as the Chiefs begin to re-tool their roster, highlighted by third-leading scorer Jack Finley being dealt to Winnipeg on Monday. But that's no reason to assume the Chiefs pose little threat - this is still a team that boasts a pair of point-per-game players and sits just seven points behind Portland with two games in hand. A big weekend on home ice presents a glorious opportunity for the Hawks to put some distance between themselves and their rivals from eastern Washington.
Dureau's Big Week
On Monday, forward Jaydon Dureau was named WHL Player of the Week for his three goals and seven assists in three games against Prince George, Victoria and Everett. The White City, Sask. native's productive week pushed him to six goals and 11 assists for 17 points through just 11 games this year, and he continues to lead the team in points per game.
After beginning the season in the AHL, Dureau returned to the team on Nov. 5. He nabbed three points in his first five games, then quickly heated up from there with five goals and nine assists for 14 points during his current seven-game point streak.
