St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints and Iowa Cubs were like two heavyweight fighters going toe-to-toe for seven games over six days. The Saints had one last big blow as they took down the I-Cubs 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at CHS Field in front of 8,513. The Saints took the series four games to three and improved their record to 35-26 on the season.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Andrew Stevenson led off with a single to right-center. He moved to second on a groundout, stole third, and scored on a Joey Gallo groundout.

In the fourth the I-Cubs knotted the game at one on a solo homer from Jake Slaughter, his 11th of the season.

Slaughter hurt the Saints in the sixth, starting the inning with a triple to center. He came around to score on a one out single by Sergio Alcántara giving the I-Cubs a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the inning the Saints tied the game back up. With one out, back-to-back singles from Chris Williams and Andrew Bechtold put runners at first and second. Jair Camargo came through with an RBI double off the wall in right that scored Williams and tied the game at two.

In the seventh, the I-Cubs grabbed the lead as Jared Young reached on a one out walk. David Bote doubled him to third and Slaughter's sacrifice line out, on a great sliding grab by Gilberto Celestino in right-center, put the I-Cubs up 3-2.

The Major League rehabbers for the Saints put them on top in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Celestino walked and Gallo deposited a 432-foot home run over the right field wall, his second in as many games with the Saints, making it 4-3. Gallo finished the day 1-3 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored. The home run by Gallo was the 17th consecutive game the Saints have homered, one shy of their franchise record set in 2021.

The Saints put up four important insurance runs in the eighth as they sent nine men to the plate. Anthony Prato led off with a walk and Alex De Goti singled him to third. Stevenson dropped an RBI single into left, increasing the lead to 5-3. For the third time on the day, Celestino drew a walk. He finished the day 0-2 with three walks and two runs scored. With one out, Wallner was hit by a pitch that forced in a run giving the Saints a 6-3 lead. With two outs and the bases loaded Bechtold singled through the right side plating two making it 8-3.

Those runs were important because in the ninth Bote delivered a two-run homer to right, his fifth of the season, cutting the lead to 8-5. Oliver Ortega, however, struck out the next two hitters and picked up his second save of the season.

The Saints are off on Monday and return to action on Tuesday with a 5:35 p.m. (CT) game at Louisville Slugger Field against the Louisville Bats. The Saints send RHP Aaron Sanchez (3-4, 4.17) to the mound against Bats RHP Brett Kennedy (2-1, 2.63). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
