Gabryszwski dazzles in 6-1 Lugs win

LANSING, Mich. - Jeremy Gabryszwski set a new career high with nine strikeouts while L.B. Dantzler drove in four runs, leading the Lansing Lugnuts (28-30) to a 6-1 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks (35-23) in the series opener on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Crosby, Tex.-native Gabryszwski (Win, 4-2) allowed one unearned run in the first inning and shut down the division-leading Silver Hawks across his six innings of work, surrendering just five hits and a walk while lowering his ERA to 3.39.

Lansing took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first with RBI singles by Dantzler and Mitch Nay, and Dawel Lugo brought across a run grounding into a fielder's choice.

A three-run home run by Dantzler off of South Bend starter Hector Hernandez (Loss, 3-1) extended the Lansing lead in the fourth inning.

Lansing's Phil Kish worked a pair of scoreless frames in relief of Gabryszwski with two strikeouts.

Reliever Griffin Murphy, just hours after learning of his Midwest League All-Star selection, had two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.

Altogether, the Lansing pitching staff tied a season high with 13 strikeouts.

Lugo extended his current hitting streak to 14 games with his 3-for-4 night. Catcher Jorge Saez also extended his team-leading on-base streak to 17 games, reaching on a walk in the first inning.

The Lugnuts and Silver Hawks play the second of the three-game series on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium, featuring $2 beers and sodas. Right-hander Chase De Jong (0-3, 5.06) will start on the mound for Lansing, countered by South Bend righty Blayne Weller (2-3, 4.39).
