Peoria Chiefs News Release

BELOIT, WI - The Peoria Chiefs allowed a bases-loaded single with one out in the eighth in falling to the Beloit Snappers 2-1 Wednesday night in the opener of a three-game series and six-game roadtrip. The loss drops the Chiefs to 31-27 but they maintain a one game Wild Card lead with 11 games to play in the half.

"We didn't have too many chances but did some things well today and had the lead going into the eighth which is what you want on the road," said Manager Joe Kruzel. "(Chase) Brookshire and (Kevin) Herget gave us three good innings each but we couldn't get it done in the ninth."

Neither team scored through the first five innings and the Chiefs broke through in the top of the sixth against Junior Mendez. Newcomer Ronnierd Garcia doubled over the right-fielder's head and scored on a single by C.J. McElroy Jr. The 1-0 lead held up as the Chiefs turned double plays to get out of two innings and caught a runner off third base on an infield single to end the seventh.

The Chiefs looked to add to the lead in the eighth as Mason Katz reached on an error and moved to second on a groundout. Richy Pedroza singled to right but Katz was thrown out at the plate by right-fielder Tyler Marincov to end the inning.

Beloit came out swinging in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Brandon Lee. With one out, Jaycob Brugman singled and Marincov walked. Zach Loraine came out of the Chiefs bullpen but Chih-Fang Pan singled to load the bases. B.A. Vollmuth singled through the left side to score two and put the Snappers up 2-1 before Loraine got out of the inning.

McElroy led off the ninth with an infield single and was sacrificed to second by Vaughn Bryan. McElroy moved to third on a groundout by Juan Herrera but Andres Avila got Ronald Castillo on a grounder to end the inning.

Chase Brookshire threw three shutout innings in the spot start. The lefty allowed one hit and walked one while striking out two. Kevin Herget also threw three shutout innings while allowing one hit. He walked two and struck out three. Lee (0-2) took the loss allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over 1 1/3 innings. Loraine allowed two hits with a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning.

"The defense came up big today with double plays. and a nice play by Katz to get another runner on the bases in the seventh," said Kruzel. "But we didn't get too much offense tonight. I'd say we had some poor at-bats with soft outs early in counts."
